Job Description This role is open to Hato Hone St John members only.
This newly created position provides an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic volunteer to join the National Youth Leadership Team (NYLT). Reporting to the National Youth Manager, you will contribute to fostering positive connections between Te Ao Maori and the Youth Programme. In this role, you will provide advice on tikanga, youth ceremonies, and the integration of te reo Maori across the curriculum. You will also manage and provide leadership to people and events as necessary, ensuring alignment with cultural protocols and practices. Additionally, you will offer guidance and facilitate contact with kaupapa Maori organisations interested in adopting aspects of the Youth Programme, promoting cultural sensitivity and collaboration within the community.
This role can be based in any city within New Zealand. You will be expected to attend the monthly NYLT meetings online and may be invited to attend quarterly in-person NYLT meetings as needed. You will be expected to attend a minimum of three divisional nights each term, which can include attendance at a variety of divisions. You will be required to obtain a permanent youth leader appointment, with the portfolio role being a fixed-term arrangement. This fixed-term appointment will be for three years, with the opportunity to renew for an additional three-year term if uncontested.
Key responsibilities include:
Act as a conduit between Te Ao Maori and the Youth Programme, providing advice on tikanga, youth ceremonies, and the integration of te reo Maori.
Establish and maintain relationships with kaupapa Maori organisations and stakeholders, providing guidance and support in fostering connections and promoting continuous improvement.
Provide leadership and advocacy nationwide to ensure cultural alignment, high standards, and effective communication across the Youth Programme.
Support portfolio officers in recruitment, training, and performance development, facilitating meetings to foster engagement and retention.
Contribute to strategic development and delivery of the National Strategy with the NYLT, manage the portfolio budget, and promote a safe, resilient workplace aligned with St John's objectives.
Qualifications Ko wai koe - About you:
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Strong understanding and knowledge of Maori protocol and culture, including fluency in Te Reo Maori.
Ability to articulate a Maori world view and apply it to the work of St John Youth.
Credibility and capability to foster, create, and maintain positive relationships with Iwi/Maori across the country.
Proven leadership within the Youth Programme, with skills in managing geographically spread volunteer teams.
Knowledge and appreciation of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application for St John in the community and health-care environments.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to handle complex issues effectively.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment, demonstrating flexibility, resilience, and a positive attitude.
Commitment to St John Core Values, with a strong "can-do" attitude and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
A strong team player with commitment to contribute to the business planning, delivery, and development.
Competency in Microsoft Office and a Level 2 First Aid certificate.
Previous managerial experience in St John Youth is preferable.
