Te Kaunihera Rata o Aotearoa | Medical Council of New Zealand (the Council) is the regulator for doctors. Their vision is to have a medical profession all New Zealanders can trust. They protect and promote public health and safety in New Zealand by registering doctors to practise medicine in New Zealand and supporting doctors to practise medicine safely by setting standards, ensuring compliance with those standards, and taking action where concerns are raised. Mo te turanga, mou hoki | About the role and who they're looking for: The role leads Council's legal team, which is responsible for assisting professional conduct committees with its investigations and prosecutions of registered doctors. The role also ensures the provision of robust, timely legal advice to Council, managers and staff that supports effective decision making and case management. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Legal Manager contributes to our organisational and people leadership. This role supports the CEO, Deputy CEO, Deputy Registrar and Registrar through a 'no-surprises' approach to meet Council's regulatory obligations in an effective and timely manner. Nga ahuatanga angitu | To be successful in the role you will need: 8 years PQE with a current practising certificate or ability to obtain one quickly.Strong litigation experienceManagement experience is desirable but those with a passion for people leadership and have either undertaken training in the leadership space and/or mentored or supervised others, will also suit this role.Previous experience in a regulatory environment and/or the health sector will be considered a bonus but not essential.High level of initiative, judgement, critical analysis, and decision-making ability.Strong verbal and written communication.Have the skills to incorporate the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in regulatory work.Hold a desire to actively contribute to the Council culture that values Maori as partners in regulatory work actively demonstrating tikanga, cultural safety and the appropriate use of te reo Maori.An effective planner with a methodical approach to their work. Builds and maintains effective, trusting relationships internally and externally with the proven ability to mentor and coach team members.
