Position Title: Lateral Police Officer – Canby Police Department

The Canby Police Department is currently recruiting for a Lateral Police Officer position. Lateral Police Officer Application Requirements:
Must currently be certified (or eligible to be certified upon hire) by Oregon State DPSST as a Police Officer and in good standing with current or previous department.
Out-of-state applicants must be certified as a Police Officer, in good standing with their department, and have completed an equivalent police academy to the Oregon DPSST.
Must have completed a Field Training Program and be off probation.
Military Police, Federal Law Enforcement, Corrections, and Parole/Probation do not qualify as lateral candidates.
Position Overview:
As a certified Police Officer, you will perform law enforcement and crime prevention duties, including patrol, investigation, report preparation, and enforcing federal, state, and local laws. The Canby Police Department consists of 29 sworn officers, including a Chief and two Captains. Officers have the opportunity to serve in specialized units or teams.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position represented by the Canby Police Association. The City offers an excellent benefits package, including PERS and matching contributions for deferred compensation. Additional compensation opportunities are available for Intermediate and Advanced Certificates, Specialty Assignments, and language proficiency pay for Spanish or any other language spoken by over 10% of the Canby population.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Patrolling: Enforce traffic and criminal laws, conduct security checks, and respond to suspicious activity.
Responding to Calls: Address various emergency situations, including traffic accidents, crimes, and civil disputes.
Investigating Crimes: Conduct preliminary investigations, gather evidence, interview victims and witnesses, and prepare reports.
Arresting Suspects: Make arrests, search suspects, and transport prisoners.
Court Testimony: Testify in court regarding investigations and reports.
Community Engagement: Participate in crime prevention activities, public relations programs, and assist the public as needed.
Competency Profile:
Thorough knowledge of police practices, federal, state, and local laws, investigative techniques, and firearm safety.
Ability to follow complex instructions, communicate effectively, prepare clear reports, and analyze situations under pressure.
Must possess good moral character and integrity, essential to maintain trust with the community and fellow officers.
Job Qualification Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED.
At least 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen.
No felony convictions or crimes involving domestic violence.
Honorable discharge from military service, if applicable.
Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Successful completion of the Police Academy and possession of DPSST Basic certification.
Must pass an oral and written exam, background check, psychological exam, and physical agility test.
Integrity and honesty are core expectations for this role.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous college-level education or additional law enforcement experience.
Knowledge of the local community.
Training in first aid, CPR, hazardous materials, firearms, and LEDS general level certification.
Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
Working Conditions:
Physical Effort: Requires mobility, manual dexterity, and the ability to wear and carry equipment weighing over 25 pounds. May involve dealing with violent or combative individuals.
Work Environment: Indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to individuals under the influence, mentally ill, or those with communicable diseases.
Travel Requirements: Frequent local travel.
