As the Kaiarahi Matua, you will bring your knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and te reo Maori me ona tikanga to support VSA's journey to build cultural capability in every role, at every level.

Mo matou | About Us Te Tuao Tawahi | Volunteer Service Abroad, a registered charity, is New Zealand's largest and most experienced volunteering agency working within international development. Mo tenei turanga mahi | About the role The initial focus of this role will be to conduct a stocktake of the current practices in place across the organisation, deriving insights and reflections on the level of current cultural competence with respect to the Maori Cultural Capability Framework.

You will indicate where progress can be made in both the long term and short term, with a focus on the key outcomes below:

Whakanui – create the conditions for te ao Maori to be valued by VSA Whakaako – create the conditions for Te Tiriti to be valued by VSA Whakaatu – create the conditions for te reo Maori to be seen, read, heard, and spoken by VSA This role has been established for an initial six-month term (7 January to 30 June 2025) on a 22.5 hours per week basis. It would ideally suit someone who has other part time mahi, someone who would like to work school hours, or someone who sitson governance boards, te mea te mea. Salary circa $90-100K (FTE), pro-rated to 0.6 FTE.

To be successful in this role you will offer:

Proven experience working in organisational transformation and leading cultural capability kaupapa. Confidence in te reo Maori, and a working knowledge of tikanga, kawa and workplace protocols. Credibility working between and among different iwi and hapu. Experience analysing an organisation's policies and processes and making improvements through a te ao Maori lens. Ability to drive solutions to align with and progress strategic goals, working with a range of staff across the organisation to bring about growth and confidence. A genuine interest in International Development, biculturalism, multiculturalism. Finally, you will be cheerful, positive and comfortable working with a bunch of professional, focused and fun colleagues!
