Join Us in Building Stronger Partnerships with Iwi and Maori Communities
We are seeking a passionate and culturally aware individual for the role of Kai-whakahaere a-Tuhono. This position will support the Pou Tuhono - Iwi Relationship Manager in ensuring that Council's obligations are met through proactive engagement and culturally appropriate policies and processes. The Kai-whakahaere a-Tuhono will play a vital role in preserving and strengthening our relationships with communities across the district.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in developing and maintaining partnerships with iwi/Maori, fostering a culture focused on effective relationships aligned with Council's strategic direction.
Provide advice and support on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, tikanga Maori, Te Reo Maori, and matauranga Maori to ensure Council's decisions and processes are informed.
Contribute to Council policy, planning, and strategy development, ensuring opportunities for meaningful Maori engagement.
Support internal staff capability development, providing ongoing learning opportunities in Te Ao Maori.
Facilitate cultural protocols such as powhiri/mihi whakatau for internal and external events, ensuring Tikanga Maori is respected and incorporated.
Enhance Council's engagement with the community, supporting positive relationships and advocating their perspectives in council activities.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
Proficient in Te Reo Maori with a sound understanding of tikanga Maori.
A tertiary qualification in a relevant field or significant practical experience in Maori engagement.
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with iwi/Maori.
Experience providing cultural advice and contributing to policy development.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey Maori perspectives to both Maori and non-Maori audiences.
Knowledge of the Waikato region, including the iwi and hapu constructs, is highly desirable.
