Environment Southland is responsible for a wide range of activities that make a significant contribution to the wellbeing of the Murihiku Southland region, including sustainably managing Southland's natural resources of land, air, fresh water, and coastal marine on behalf of the community.
Environment Southland has recently established an Investment Committee which will provide strategic advice on the Council's Investment Portfolio and undertake related activities to help maximise the returns to Council from its investments.
Environment Southland's investments include a majority shareholding in South Port New Zealand Limited, a managed fund portfolio, and property. The Committee's mandate also includes strategic oversight of the debt that is used to fund Council's investment assets.
Particular skills / competencies sought Environment Southland have agreed to appoint an independent member to be Chair of the Investment Committee and are also considering the option of appointing a second independent member who will be on the Committee.
If only one appointment is made, the Chair will also be appointed to the South Port Board as a non-independent director. If two appointments are made, Council will decide which appointee will be appointed to the South Port Board.

Commitment required It is anticipated that for the next year or two, there will be six to eight meetings per year, before a routine of quarterly meetings can be established.
Meetings will generally be held in person, in Invercargill.
Term If one person is appointed, they will have an initial three-year term.
If two people are appointed, one person will have an initial three-year term, and the other person will have an initial two-year term. The different terms are to manage risk by ensuring continuity when rotations occur.
Geographical considerations Consideration will be given to candidates from any location, with preference being given to those candidates who reside in, or can easily get to, Invercargill for meetings.
