Position Overview Responsible for researching and understanding advertising and consumer law principles across New Zealand, Australia, UK, USA and Canada.
Project managing the claims development process for all consumer advertising related claims, determining whether and how we can make claims in our key markets.
Work closely with marketing, product, commercial and compliance colleagues to develop best-in-class claims across our portfolio of consumer brands.
Work on general corporate matters.
Negotiate and draft a variety of contracts, marketing and promotions agreements.
Position Impact Setting up our global brands to have the best chance of success, both in-store and online by developing claims that resonate with customers and provide a meaningful point of difference vs. the competition.
Working through complex legal and regulatory challenges to ensure we not only manage risk, but problem-solve to best meet the needs of the various stakeholders across the business.
Conduct comprehensive research to understand how high-risk claims can be substantiated, with a particular focus on key competitors, to ensure we can react accordingly.
Working on contracts and general corporate legal matters to ensure the company's position is protected.
Responsibilities Claims Strategy Development: Define and implement a global claims strategy that aligns with the brand's marketing goals and legal guidelines across all markets.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all product claims (e.g., benefits, sustainability, performance) are legally compliant with regional and global regulations in advertising and packaging.
General Corporate Legal: Contract review, drafting, and advice.
An ability to assess and evaluate a broad range of legal issues and risks and provide commercially focused practical legal advice.
Employee Trainings: Provide internal education and training on relevant legal issues.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with marketing, legal, R&D, and packaging teams to validate product claims and ensure consistency across all channels and platforms.
Consumer Insight Integration: Leverage consumer insights and market research to develop compelling and credible claims that resonate with target audiences in different regions.
Monitoring and Updating Claims: Keep track of competitive claims and industry trends to proactively update and evolve product claims to maintain brand competitiveness.
Stakeholder Management: Liaise with external regulatory bodies, advertising standards authorities, and packaging suppliers to ensure that all claims are approved and meet required standards globally.
Skills & Experience Bachelor of Laws, license to practice law in New Zealand.
3-5+ years of legal practice experience, with preference going to candidates with a focus on consumer advertising law (Fair Trading Act, ACCC, FTC etc.).
General corporate law experience (contracts, privacy, regulatory, etc.).
Strong experience working with and/or for consumer brands, providing advice as it relates to packaging and advertising claims.
Excellent communication skills and ability to engage at all levels of the organisation.
Preference will be given to those who have prior experience working on consumer and advertising law internationally.
