The role
We're seeking a Human Factors Senior Advisor to join the specialist services team supporting accident investigations. You'll provide expert human factors advice on the interaction between the human, the machine, and environment, across rail, marine, and aviation accidents.
You'll lead and champion our culture of evidence-informed decision making, and develop our human factors related guidance and tools to support our investigators and support our human factors knowledge transfer.
Your expert input will be vital throughout investigation lifecycles and includes attending accident sites at times to secure and gather evidence, providing your expertise and guidance throughout the investigation and report process, including appearing regularly before the Commission.
Skills and experience
You'll be a skilled human factors expert – bringing a combination of robust theoretical knowledge, a high level qualification majoring in the human factors realm, and global industry best practice awareness. You'll have credible experience applying your human factors expertise, ideally in the transport sector.
To be considered for this position, we'd like to see:
A Masters or PhD in a field relevant to the study of human factor issues
and experience in:
applying your human factors expertise, preferably in the transport sector
developing human factors guidance and tools
implementation of guidance and tools, and coaching of others.
In addition you'll have:
ideally, some investigative experience
excellent communication skills – including top-notch writing skills and the ability to convey complex and technical information easily
a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
energy, vigour, and the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
As you will need to attend accident sites, emotional maturity, a good degree of fitness, and the ability to pass a full medical is required. This role is based in our central Wellington office.
About the organisation
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) investigates significant aviation, rail, and marine accidents and incidents with a view to avoiding similar occurrences in the future. Multi-disciplinary teams investigate and analyse the circumstances of these occurrences, supporting the Commission to consider the facts, and make findings and recommendations to improve transport safety, rather than to ascribe blame.

This is a highly specialised role, and while you might not meet all of the requirements, we do require the high level tertiary qualification specialising in human factor issues, so we're keen to hear from human factors experts working within public and private sectors, including academia.
