Herd Manager Position – Join Our Team

Location: Rakaia (20 minutes north of Ashburton)We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Herd Manager to join our family-owned dairy farm in Rakaia. We milk 800 cows through a 60-bale rotary with ECR, and we pride ourselves on a supportive, team-focused work environment.About the Role:As a Herd Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the herd, ensuring animal health, quality milk production, and pasture management. You will work alongside a dedicated team of 4.5 staff members on a roster system (8-2, 8-3) to ensure smooth, efficient operations.Key Responsibilities:Milking: Assist with the smooth operation of milking and proactively address any milk quality issues.Animal Health: Monitor and identify signs of illness in cows, including lameness, mastitis, bloat, milk fever, and pneumonia. Assist with treatments as required.Mating: Ensure the effective implementation of the farm's mating management policy and guide junior staff in following best practices.Calving: Monitor cows closely for signs of milk fever and ensure proper care during calving.Pasture Management:Calculate pasture and feed supplement requirements to ensure cows receive the right nutrition.Set up break fences and manage feeding allocations.Identify, report, and manage weed control.Prevent pasture damage and implement best practices to maintain pasture quality.Machinery Operation: Safely operate farm machinery, including motorbikes and ATVs, in compliance with health and safety guidelines.What We're Looking For:A minimum of one year's farming experience; previous New Zealand farming experience is an advantage.A positive attitude and strong communication skills – you will be an essential team player, supporting and helping your colleagues.A willingness to learn, grow, and progress within the farming industry.About Us:We are a family-owned farm that values hard work, enthusiasm, and doing things the right way.
