Haematology Registrars (Non-Training, Basic Trainees and Advance Trainees) (2025 Training Year) Start date from 27 January 2025 About us Palmerston North Regional Hospital is the premier healthcare institution in the MidCentral Region. With a dedicated Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, and Regional Cancer Treatment Service, as well as one of the largest trauma centres nationwide, Palmerston North Hospital provides industry leading specialised care and emergency treatment to the MidCentral region.
Our region includes Manawatu, Horowhenua, and Otaki districts on the western coast to the Tararua district on the eastern coast. With a capacity of over 380 beds, we provide secondary care to an urban population of 81,000 and over 200,000 in the catchment area. As a teaching hospital affiliated with New Zealand medical schools, we unite exceptional healthcare practice with modern education and research.
The Opportunity The run is accredited for training with the College of Australasian Physicians for both basic and advanced trainees and is accredited for training with the College of Australasian pathologists for advanced haematology training (lab and clinical). Non-training registrars, basic trainees, advanced haematology trainees are all welcome to apply.
The position is to join a team of seven consultant haematologists and haematology registrars based at Palmerston North Hospital.
The service provides haematology services to a population of approximately 500,000, which includes the geographical area of the Manawatu (Palmerston North), Whanganui, Taranaki (New Plymouth and Hawera) and Hawkes Bay (Napier, Hastings). Inpatient care is provided at Palmerston North Hospital with outreach visiting clinics to Whanganui, Hawera, New Plymouth and Hastings. A full range of haematology services is provided including coagulation, thrombosis, non-malignant and malignant haematology including acute myeloid leukaemia and autologous stem cell transplant.
The position would include working on the haematology inpatient ward and haematology outpatient clinics. Haematology clinics include both local clinics and monthly overnight regional clinics. The on-call commitment is for participation in the oncology after hours rosters for weekdays 4-11pm and weekends 8-11pm. Call is shared among approximately 11 oncology registrars.
Appointments for 12-24 months are available.

Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand or be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
