Stretching from Punakaiki in the south to Karamea in the north, and inland as far as Springs Junction, the district is home to a population of just over 9,500, and the 8,574 square km's boasts two national parks, one forest park, and two heritage areas.
Reporting to the newly appointed Chief Executive, the Group Manager Regulatory Services is a diverse role leading a team of 20, across with the full spectrum of planning, building, compliance and regulatory services, acting as champion for the Buller Districts future climate adaptation programme.
As a key member of the senior team, you will contribute to the strategic leadership of the Council, working closely with elected members and key stakeholders in the community.
This role has a broad span of control with plenty of variety and challenge.

About the Person: Successful candidates could come from professional services, local government or a similarly complex operating environment and have demonstrated leadership experience with environmental and regulatory activities.
You will: Be empathetic, focussed on building capability and genuinely care for your team focusing on developing their skills and capabilities through mentoring and coaching.
Possess the ability to inspire and lead a diverse team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
Have a robust understanding and hands-on experience with the Resource Management Act (RMA) and other relevant regulatory frameworks.
Show a willingness to get your hands dirty, engaging directly with projects and tasks when necessary to ensure successful outcomes.
Be strategic, but also have strong technical understanding of and experience with complex regulatory and compliance matters Interact regularly and confidently with elected officials, providing informed advice and support.
Be very resourceful, practical, resilient and prepared to roll up your sleeves when required Point to a successful track record of customer-focussed delivery, problem solving, project management and external stakeholder engagement, particularly with iwi and neighbouring councils Enjoy flying the plane while building it!

About the Organisation: The Buller District Council is the territorial authority for the northern West Coast.
Council's goal is to promote the well-being of its local communities.
It has a wide range of responsibilities under the Local Government Act.
Council's mission is to serve the residents of the Buller district, conscious of their needs, by providing facilities and services and creating an appropriate environment for progress and development; while preserving the distinctive natural environment, as well as the cultural and historical environments.
Council consists of 11 elected members, the Mayor and 10 Councillors and an Iwi Representative from Ngati Waewae.
Council's role is to provide local leadership and facilitate the delivery of services and activities that promote community well-being throughout the Buller District.
Council provides leadership relating to issues that affect the community, through the management of the environment and promotion of the District's needs and aspirations.
It ensures that the district's infrastructural assets and associated resources are utilised and managed in a responsible way for the benefit of residents and ratepayers both today and in the future.
Council wants to make sure its region grows and develops in a way that keeps its values safe for future generations.
