About the role We are seeking a motivated and dedicated General Medicine Registrar for a fixed-term 6-month position from mid-February to mid-July 2025 at Nelson Hospital. This is an excellent opportunity to advance your skills in a supportive environment while working as part of a dynamic and highly skilled team. You are expected to participate in outpatient clinics with your allocated supervising specialist. This allocation can accommodate specific clinical interests of trainees on request.
The working hours are 8.00 AM to 4.00 PM Monday to Friday with long days between 4.00 PM to 10.00 PM. Night shifts will be 10.00 PM to 8.00 AM. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are 8.00 AM to 10.00 PM.
No on-call is required; however, the position includes cross cover and additional duties.
About the Team/Service/Location Nelson Hospital provides a broad range of acute and elective medical services in the Nelson Marlborough region. The General Medicine department is a collegial and well-supported service, offering exposure to a diverse case mix with excellent opportunities for professional growth. You will have access to experienced consultants committed to teaching and mentorship, supportive multidisciplinary teams, and collaborative work environments, as well as opportunities to engage in quality improvement, teaching, and clinical audits.
The General Medical Team provides outstanding clinical experience in undifferentiated Acute Adult Medicine with excellent support from the Cardiology Team. General Physicians are dual specialists with sub-specialty interests including Endocrinology/Diabetes, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Oncology and Haematology, Renal medicine and Intensive Care, Respiratory medicine, Rheumatology, and Neurology. These specialty practices are predominantly outpatient service-based with support provided to the General Medical Admitting Team for inpatient sub-specialty advice and care.
About you: The successful candidate will:
Provide medical care to acutely unwell patients under the supervision of senior physicians.Manage inpatient and outpatient care, including ward rounds, patient assessments, and clinical documentation.Participate in the acute admitting roster and deliver timely, effective care.Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including nursing staff, allied health professionals, and consultants, to ensure comprehensive care.Contribute to educational sessions, clinical meetings, and quality improvement initiatives within the department.Support and supervise house officers, providing guidance and teaching where needed.Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, ensuring continuity of care and adherence to clinical standards.Skills and experience Eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and General scope of practice with the Medical Council of New Zealand.PGY3 or above with prior experience in General Medicine preferred.Ability to work independently while maintaining a collaborative team approach.Strong clinical reasoning, time management, and communication skills.Competency with te ao Maori, tikanga, and te reo Maori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.Experience in projects/initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti principles and frameworks, and the application of Matauranga Maori and Kaupapa Maori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.Working for Health New Zealand Health NZ is the weaving of wellnesses.
