Rural Design (1984) Ltd is looking to recruit a Consultant Ecologist to join our small, yet busy Ecological Consultancy located in Kaiwaka on a fixed term maternity contract for a 12-month period. The position is to commence in mid-February 2025 and has the potential to be extended after the initial 12-month period.
We are a growing Ecological Consultancy like no other, having an on-site native plant nursery, and a large field team that help us go from conceptual ecological restoration design to implementation.
Our small inter-disciplinary team has a varied and interesting portfolio of land management, conservation and development projects in working with both private landowners and public sectors (local and regional councils, NGOs, community groups). In your role, you would be working alongside a small team of passionate ecologists specialising in botany, avifauna, terrestrial and freshwater ecology.
Our current workload includes a wide range of ecology jobs throughout Northland and Auckland regions, primarily associated with Ecological Assessments for Resource Consent applications, as well as preparation of Ecological Restoration Plans for large scale revegetation projects. Our work covers a broad spectrum of ecological surveys and ecological reporting from botanical assessments to wetland delineation surveys, fauna surveys (ichthyofauna, avifauna, herpetofauna and chiroptera) and stream ecological valuations.
For this role you should be able to demonstrate a combination of the following:
A relevant undergraduate or postgraduate degree in ecology or directly related subject.3+ years' experience working within an ecological consultancy or a relevant field of ecology.Good native and exotic flora and fauna field ID skills covering a range of ecosystems, habitats and taxa.Experience with accurate field ecological data collection and analysis including the use of ArcGIS Field Maps.Physically fit to undertake field surveys in terrestrial and aquatic environments in remote locations. Familiarity with the RMA, NPS-FM, NES-F and other relevant legislation.Familiarity with regulatory regional planning process.Familiarity with the ecological provisions under the relevant regional and district plans will be a distinctive advantage (e.g., AUP(OP), KDC and WDC District Plans).Excellent communication and organisational skills to enable you to work and liaise with your team, external consultants and Clients.Experience interacting with Clients (e.g. able to undertake solo site visits and discuss concepts with Clients in person)Excellent attention to detail and ability to write clear, technical reports.Excellent time and project management skills.Proficient in Word, Excel and other Microsoft Office programs.Proficient working knowledge of GIS systems (particularly ArcGIS Pro) is advantageous. A desire to work and grow with the company.We are looking for someone with previous experience in the ecological consultancy field who has a keen interest in ecology, enthusiasm, motivation and an ability to communicate well with peers and clients. You should have an inquisitive mind, an aptitude for problem solving, a passion for environmental protection and be able to work well within a team setting as well as independently.
