About the role
For future intakes, you will join the Army as an IT Specialist, branching into a specific trade towards the end of Signals Corps training: Either Electronic Warfare Operator, Information Management Specialist, Information Systems Operator, Radio Frequency Technician, or Systems Engineer.
As an Electronic Warfare Operator, you will detect, intercept, collect, identify, analyze, and exploit electronic emissions within the electromagnetic spectrum.
You will work in a team environment, sometimes in high-pressure situations, to analyze the information you have collected.
During your training, you will be taught to operate military radios and other voice and data communication networks in various scenarios.
Job on base
Within camp, you will maintain your skillset on sensor and communication systems, applying analytical processes to various problems.
You will conduct training to stay proficient in general soldiering skills such as physical fitness, weapon handling, infantry tactics, and medical training tasks.
Job on deployment
Electronic Warfare Operators may be deployed overseas, supporting New Zealand's military commitments. Responsibilities may include force protection and producing reports through analytical procedures.
To be an effective EW Operator, you need to enjoy the outdoors, be a problem solver, and think quickly under pressure.
Career progression and training
Your trade training includes a mixture of courses and on-the-job training, spanning approximately eight years. Courses will focus on technical skills, communication, decision-making, and leadership ability.
You will initially be posted to Burnham Military Camp, Christchurch, and may have opportunities in Auckland, Waiouru, and Wellington as your career progresses.

Royal New Zealand Corps of Signals Training Course
Your initial communications training will begin with a five-month course at Linton Military Camp, covering a broad range of radio and communications equipment.
Junior Electronic Warfare Operators Course
This seven-week course provides fundamental principles of collection and dissemination of information from the electromagnetic spectrum.
Intermediate Electronic Warfare Operators Course
This six-week course focuses on information analysis, report writing, and presentation skills.
Senior Electronic Warfare Operators Course
This four-week course teaches you to plan tactical Electronic Warfare operations and manage capabilities and personnel.
Trade Promotion Courses
The Troop Sergeants Course tests your trade knowledge and leadership ability.
Additional Courses
Additional training opportunities will arise within NZ and overseas, including command courses for leadership development.

Entry requirements
You must be at least 18 years of age upon completion of recruit course.
You must have been a NZ Citizen for a minimum of 10 years.
Complete a 10-year background history check.
You must be able to obtain a TSV security clearance.
You must meet minimum entry fitness standards.
