Job Description Mo te turanga | About the role The Director of Audience Engagement at Auckland Museum holds a pivotal executive position, responsible for developing and delivering new galleries, exhibitions and public programmes aligned to the Museum's Path to 2029 Strategic Direction. This role requires deep knowledge of Museum practices alongside advanced bicultural competency to ensure that the Museum leads with its Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations. The successful candidate will play a key role in leading the delivery of exceptional public experiences that are audience-led, culturally rich, and internationally competitive.
The role encompasses responsibility across five critical areas: gallery development, touring exhibitions, learning and education, public programmes and events, digital experiences, and marketing. This role drives innovation and collaboration, working across teams and with external stakeholders. In partnership with internal and external contributors, the Director of Audience Engagement leads programmes of work which enrich Auckland's cultural landscape and enhance social cohesion under the korowai of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Desired Skills and Experience Strategic Vision and Leadership: Demonstrated experience in an executive or senior leadership role within the GLAM sector. You bring a track record of successfully developing and delivering large-scale gallery renewal projects, exhibitions and learning programmes that are audience-centred and enhance public engagement.Cultural Competency: You understand the Museum's obligations as a good Treaty Partner and have demonstrated experience working in genuine partnership with tangata whenua.Audience-Centric Programme Development: Expertise in developing, delivering, and evolving programmes across physical and digital platforms to meet diverse audience needs, with a strong commitment to educational outreach, community engagement, and inclusivity.Cross-Functional Collaboration: Proven ability to work collaboratively within and across organisations, fostering teamwork and innovation among cross-disciplinary teams. You excel in building partnerships with external stakeholders to achieve shared goals.Innovative Digital Leadership Expertise: Strong background in digital engagement strategies and content development, with skills in market research and targeted marketing to expand audience reach and relevance.Operational Excellence: Skilled in managing complex projects and operational plans across multiple functions, with an understanding of the logistical and production requirements of public programmes, touring exhibitions, revenue generation and events.This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on Auckland Museum's journey to being a leader in public engagement.
