Designer, Salient Magazine

Details of the offer

Victoria University of Wellington – Kelburn, North Island
Salient is the student-run, student-led magazine at Victoria University. Since 1938, Salient has existed to hold the University and Students' Association to account, whilst providing a fun and informative weekly publication for students to enjoy. The magazine is funded by VUWSA (Victoria University of Wellington Students' Association) but remains editorially independent.
This level of editorial independence offers more creative control than many design roles and the successful applicant will enjoy pushing the boundaries of student media in this unique opportunity. You'll also enjoy working with a tight-knit, enthusiastic, and creative team with a passion for student media.
About the Role This is a paid position which begins in early February 2025 and ends in early October 2025. The designer is responsible for all visual and technical aspects of the production of Salient, a weekly student magazine.
We are looking for a motivated individual with a strong sense of aesthetics and a passion for print and editorial design.
Qualifications and Experience The successful applicant will ideally be a design graduate
Strong visual communication skills, understanding of various aspects of design including photography, illustration, and typography
Computer fluency, including Mac familiarity and robust knowledge of Adobe CS
Extensive experience with InDesign
Excellent understanding of new media and an interest in student journalism
Ability to organise work effectively, prioritise tasks, work to deadlines, and identify issues before they become problems.
Ability to work in a team and communicate with various stakeholders in a culturally safe manner.
Salient understands its position as a colonial institution operating within the University structure. Salient strives to uphold the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the successful applicant will bring a high level of respect for and a basic understanding of Te Ao Maori.
How to Apply Apply through Seek with a CV, a cover letter stating your vision for Salient, and a portfolio of previous work (and attach your portfolio to your cover letter). In the selection process, we may ask you to design an example feature. We are accepting applications from individuals or two people with a shared vision who apply as a team.
