Victoria University of Wellington – Kelburn, North IslandSalient is the student-run, student-led magazine at Victoria University. Since 1938, Salient has existed to hold the University and Students' Association to account, whilst providing a fun and informative weekly publication for students to enjoy. The magazine is funded by VUWSA (Victoria University of Wellington Students' Association) but remains editorially independent.This level of editorial independence offers more creative control than many design roles and the successful applicant will enjoy pushing the boundaries of student media in this unique opportunity. You'll also enjoy working with a tight-knit, enthusiastic, and creative team with a passion for student media.About the RoleThis is a paid position which begins in early February 2025 and ends in early October 2025. The designer is responsible for all visual and technical aspects of the production of Salient, a weekly student magazine.We are looking for a motivated individual with a strong sense of aesthetics and a passion for print and editorial design.Qualifications and ExperienceThe successful applicant will ideally be a design graduateStrong visual communication skills, understanding of various aspects of design including photography, illustration, and typographyComputer fluency, including Mac familiarity and robust knowledge of Adobe CSExtensive experience with InDesignExcellent understanding of new media and an interest in student journalismAbility to organise work effectively, prioritise tasks, work to deadlines, and identify issues before they become problems.Ability to work in a team and communicate with various stakeholders in a culturally safe manner.Salient understands its position as a colonial institution operating within the University structure.
