Interested in playing a key role in protecting and enhancing the interests of Aotearoa by managing border security and community risks that come with the flow of people, goods and craft into and out of New Zealand?We have Customs Officer roles based at Christchurch Airport and in the Maritime Group at Lyttelton Port as part of the Deployment Cycle.
As a Customs Officer you'll bring high levels of integrity, honesty and discretion.
You'll interact and communicate with a wide range of people and ensure a quality customer experience.You'll be part of a close-knit team.
Being in our deployment model, typically you will start at the airport or port and move around different operational locations / areas every couple of years.
Areas include inspections, Customs Controlled Area team, and Service Delivery.
Even if you are not deployed to these areas, you will have the opportunity to learn about them.
Work areas are located around Christchurch International Airport and Custom House on Orchard Road, except for the Maritime team which works at the Port of Lyttelton.Hours of work in this location provide for 24/7 coverage across a 6 days on/3 days off roster pattern, for which an annual allowance will be paid.
There will be an on-call requirement shared amongst the team for which a daily on-call allowance will be paid.The annual salary for this role is $58,718 plus an annual allowance of $13,679 for working rostered shifts.What you'll be doing | He aha tau e mahi anaWe'll train you for the job - and once you've successfully completed training you'll be:Facilitating passengers and goods in and out of NZ, note taking, writing reports and entering information into our electronic systems;Questioning passengers and undertaking activities such as searching baggage;Processing passengers through Customs processes, this might have you sitting in a booth for long periods of time or standing up for long periods of time assisting passengers;Ensuring passengers meet immigration requirements and knowing when to escalate situations.Inspecting goods, packages and/or containers at our Inspections facility or Lyttelton port.Working as part of our Border Protect initiative and regularly going out and engaging with stakeholders, businesses and others who work in the freight environment, educating and advising on Customs' core functions.Conducting Customs activities at the Port of Lyttelton including inspecting cargo, immigrating passengers, port patrol etc What you'll need to be successful | Ko nga mea ka hiahia e koe kia angitu te haere A full unrestricted driver's licenseBe willing to work a shift pattern (including unsociable hours) as a core part of the role;Have a good level of fitness and physical ability so you can complete the full range of duties in the role.
To work for the New Zealand Customs Service, you must be able to meet the following requirements:Be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent ResidentResiding in New Zealand at the time of applicationHave resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years*Successful applicants are also required to pass a medical assessment, drug test and have a clear Police record.
*If you are a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years but have been absent from New Zealand for periods of 6-9 months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA then you will be required to provide overseas Police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.Please note, we are recruiting for an intake commencing on 11th November 2024 and some of the training scheduled for this intake will be held in Auckland.
