Who we are
VisAble is a disabled person-led organisation that aims to build capacity and capability across disability, health, police, family violence and sexual violence organisations and sectors in the prevention and response to abuse against people and Adults at Risk. VisAble enables safe lives, free from harm, abuse, and violence, to ensure people are heard and the people, community and systems are aware and responsive.
When we say people in this document, we mean tangata and whanau whaikaha Maori, d/Deaf, disabled people, Adults at Risk (across the lifespan), tagata sa'ilimalo and their aiga-tele, neurodivergent people and their families.
Our kaimahi have extensive experience and expertise working with the disabled community, health, police, disability, and family violence and sexual violence sectors. Together, our goal is to create safety and improve the wellbeing and outcomes of people.
What we do
At VisAble, we draw on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Enabling Good Lives principles with a specific focus on disability rights, safeguarding, and violence prevention. We have two main streams of supports:
Working in partnership with organisations who work directly or indirectly with people impacted by violence to equip and enable them to improve inclusivity and accessibility of their services.
Responding to situations of concern for people experiencing violence, abuse and neglect.
We work under a Kaitiakitanga approach with a strong rights-based, mana enhancing, person-led and whanau centred practice.
Mo te tunga | About the role
We are requiring a leader with mana in te ao Maori, disability and violence prevention communities to give voice toa te ao Maori perspective within VisAble, to partner in developing and ensuring VisAble is a Tiriti based organisation through implementing VisAble's Te Tiriti framework; so as to assist the whole VisAble team to better prevent and respond to abuse against tangata whaikaha Maori.
While this is intended as a virtual position, there may be some travel involved with this role. VisAble is a new organisation and therefore responsibilities may evolve as VisAble, and its priorities evolve.
Work includes to:
Partner with the Chief Executive in developing and ensuring VisAble is a Tiriti based organisation, and ensure the Tiriti framework is current and relevant
Support leaders and managers in developing Tiriti framework consistent business plan and teamwork plans
Work with the Chief Executive to systemically advocate to government and other stakeholders to transform Aotearoa's abuse prevention and response systems
Work collectively with other disability and/or violence prevention organisations, in particular kaupapa Maori, supporting VisAble to understand its role in an abuse prevention and response system
Partner with others on specific projects, including ensuring Tiriti issues are included
Supporting kaimahi Maori to succeed through the tangata whenua ropu, and contribute to their professional development and cultural safety
Monitor and ensure the wellbeing of tangata whakkaha Maori we support, including tinana, hinengaro, wairua, and whanau wellbeing components embedded in the whenua
Work as part of the leadership team to ensure VisAble's survival, sustainability, efficiency, effectiveness, and we are having a positive impact on the lives of the people we are here for

Skills and Personal Attributes

To do this work you will need
An intuitive ability to express and to model manakitanga, kaitiakitanga, mana taurite, mana Motuhake, and kotahitanga, values at the heart, ngakau of VisAble
Experience in working in either kaupapa Maori, violence and abuse prevention and response, disability or mental health organisations
Experience in asserting challenging perspectives; tika, pono, while seeking to build consensus, aroha, inside an organisation and externally
Innovation and leadership to set up new systems in a developing organisation
Resilience in working with stories of abuse, and pro-activity in seeking wellbeing support and supervision, lived experience of abuse, trauma and recovery is of additional value
An understanding of abuse, including abuse specific to disabled people and tangata whaikaha Maori
An understanding of how to prevent abuse and the factors that lead to abuse, and strategies to prevent it and keep tangata whakaha Maori safe
An understanding of how to respond to abuse, including trauma informed and mana informed responses
Kawanatanga, an understanding of governance, government, its processes and how to use them
Tino rangatiratanga, tikanga, a fluency in te reo, to be credible on Marae, hui, wananga, in other kaupapa Maori settings, and understanding disabled led in te ao Maori
Ritenga, understanding disability rights, being disabled led, racism, ableism, colonised ableism, at interpersonal and systemic levels, and strategies to address these
Wairuatanga, able to lead or guide on use of waiata, karakia, wairua components of VisAble's work
