Work as a midwife in true midwifery practice in a wonderful maternity unit!
We are committed to women-centred and culturally respectful care
We have a fabulous supportive midwifery team environment

Nga mohiohio e pa ana ki tenei mahi (About this position)
As a recent or new graduate, who meets the Midwifery Council and NZCOM enrolment requirements for the Midwifery First Year of Practice programme (MFYP), we will assist your transition to practice through a comprehensive orientation, access to midwifery educator support, and a range of clinical experiences to help prepare you to become a confident midwifery practitioner.
As a midwife, you will be able to use all of your clinical and organisational skills and expertise across pregnancy, birthing, and postnatal care.
You will be rostered across AM, PM, and Nights and will have the choice of working 4 hr, 8 hr, or 12 hr shifts. The best part of our unique midwifery first year of practice programme is being fully supported to get to experience working across our two secondary units (great experience!), our primary unit, and community midwifery teams too!
Accommodation, travel, and any other expenses will be covered! Wow, what a great opportunity!
Why come to the Nelson-Tasman region?
New midwifery staff are saying:
"We love the pace of life, the climate, the beauty of the region, and the team is wonderful to work with!"
We have 1,500 births a year across Te Tau Ihu and we can promise that your core midwifery role will be busy and varied, so no two days will be the same.
The best thing is that our service is midwifery-led, so you will get to be a midwife practicing in all the areas you love!
Ko wai he kaitonototika? (Who is an appropriate applicant?)
You will have loads of passion and a commitment to women-centred and culturally respectful care.
A matou ropu (About our team)
The Nelson Marlborough midwifery team is awesome! We are very proud of our teams and the service we provide to our communities.
Our midwifery-led service has close collegial relationships with our Obstetric and Paediatric teams. The Nelson Hospital secondary maternity team works closely with our local primary maternity unit, located in Motueka, and our other secondary maternity unit based at Wairau Hospital in Blenheim.
As a part of your first year of practice, you will have the opportunity to work across both secondary units, the midwifery-led primary unit, and with our community midwifery teams too! This means you will get to experience all areas of midwifery to find out what you love the most.
We will support you with accommodation and travel to work and experience all of these opportunities as a unique part of our Midwifery First Year of Practice programme.
If you like working across more than one area, after your first year of practice you will also be able to do so! You get to experience the best of Te Tau Ihu, the top of the south!
The team not only enjoys a positive work environment in an active NZCOM region, we also love to get together for social activities.
We can guarantee you'll receive a very warm welcome into our teams!
Here at Te Whatu Ora (Nelson Marlborough), we encourage a workforce that's innovative, eager to learn and enhance their skills, and passionate about caring for our community.
We do great work and we need a talented and diverse team to help us deliver.
Nelson Tasman is a place of stunning natural landscapes: lakes, mountains, rivers, native bush, and beaches. The region is known for its relaxed lifestyle and year-round dry and sunny days.
