The region covers an area of 12,600 square kilometres with a population of 170,000.Our team is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Geriatrician to join our growing team of 5.5FTE SMOs. We have been developing and expanding our service to meet the needs of the rapidly growing older population of Northland, aiming to provide better care for the frail elderly across both hospital and community settings.This additional role is based at Whangarei Hospital, which is a 250-bed district hospital with all major specialties. We have 10-12 Acute Care of the Elderly beds (ACE) with a full multidisciplinary team and provide an ACE service in ED to rapidly assess, and if possible, prevent admission. We also have a 30-bed Assessment and Rehabilitation ward (which includes a 10-bed Acute Stroke Unit).We provide outpatient clinics on five sites across Northland as well as inpatient orthogeriatric services, fracture liaison, and perioperative services.The service is well supported by community rehabilitation teams, a region-wide needs assessment service, and Gerontology nurse specialists.At present, we are developing our Hospital in the Home / Early supported discharge services as well as improving our Orthogeriatric service model. We are also looking to enhance our Dementia and Rehabilitation services.
