Reporting to: Whangaparaoa Golf Club Management Committee Date: Oct 2024 Key Purpose Alongside the Course Supervisor (CS) and Golf Operations Manager (GOM), the Commercial Manager (CM) will provide leadership in managing all assigned responsibilities of the club's business in an efficient and effective manner to ensure club and course development in line with the WGC Strategic Plan.
The CM reports directly to the President and Management Committee. The principal role of the CM is to achieve the high potential of WGC as a golf club within a financially sustainable environment, focused on member enjoyment, safety and quality of overall experience. The CM will successfully lead, manage and develop productive external relations with sponsors, the community, media and contractors in relation to club activities. The CM will also function as the WGC Health and Safety officer and line manage the Financial Administrator role.
Key Responsibilities: Commercial and Financial Management:Take professional leadership responsibility for the commercial activities of the Club, including external relations, grants and sponsorships, relevant golfing and administrative activities by securing effective day to day running of the Club in association with the Golf Operations Manager (GOM) and Course Superintendent (CS). Submit written pre-meeting monthly progress reports to the Management Committee for approval, formally covering progress on commercial strategy, activities and outcomes, membership updates, staffing matters, risk management and course development projects consistent with an annually updated Strategic Plan.Actively manage all Club commercial relationships, specifically but not exclusively including the contractual business performance of Golf HQ, Bar and Café.Working to the standards set by the Treasurer and Management Committee and consistent with the WGC Strategic Plan, work with the financial administrator to ensure the robust financial stability of the Club through the adoption of sound financial management principles, including timely presentation and accuracy of comprehensive data captured for use by the Treasurer.Monitor financial performance against operating budgets, taking prompt appropriate action to address variances to ensure that each operating area achieves agreed targets.Assist the Treasurer with the preparation of the Annual Budget. Marketing and Promotions Seek out, prepare and submit regular external grant funding applications for capital expenditure projects, such as Clubhouse and course improvements or equipment purchase. Engage with and be visible to the membership and visitors and ensure that areas relevant to client satisfaction are understood and delivered by all employees. .Identify and develop innovative programs and value-added services for all WGC activities, including golf events (with GOM), social functions and external lettings.Actively pursue agreed levels of membership recruitment and retention through regular internal updates and promotional initiatives for members and visitors.Devise and deliver effective external marketing, promotions, social media communications and events of commercial benefit.Retain and extend mutually beneficial club sponsorships, promoting the Club's image and involvement as a part of the wider Whangaparaoa and golfing communities. Operational Management: Exercise effective line management of the financial administrator and other assigned staff, including performance and target setting, well-being and development.Prepare the agenda and attend monthly Management Committee meetings as Minutes Secretary and provide timely monthly written reports and minutes (as above)Prepare and communicate all matters and timely securing of reports for Members, prior to and at the AGM, including recording of minutes. Work flexibly to fulfil other club related duties and roles as reasonably required for effective day to day golf club operations. Human and Physical Resources Management: Exercise active oversight of the care, security and maintenance of all assets and resources of the Club.In liaison with Treasurer, effectively manage the personnel records of all WGC employees, including annual and sickness leave and hours of work.Ensure that performance reviews by line managers are undertaken, recorded and reported to Management Committee appropriately. Undertake regular performance reviews of external contracts, and ensuring any issues are addressed promptly and effectively, in line with budgets, target dates and performance indicators.In line with Management Committee approvals and agreed procedures, administer staff recruitment and secure appropriate induction by line managers. Maintain full compliance with all relevant statutory legislation, including employment, health and safety, and licensing, in conjunction with Auckland Council and other appropriate external bodies. Health and Safety: As H & S Officer, manage the Club's risk management framework by ensuring risk is assessed, reviewed and mitigated, and that the Club is appropriately insured.Take responsibility for compliance with all Health and Safety requirements pursuant to the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and successor legislation.Ensure all health and safety issues are promptly raised and hazards minimized. Qualifications and Skills Degree, diploma or extensive experience in sales, marketing and related rolesExperience in financial areas within a Club or hospitality environment.Strong organisational skillsExcellent communication and interpersonal skillsSelf-motivating capacity, whilst comfortable in working within a team.Capacity to produce quality written reports, publicity materials and social media posts Preferred Experience Experience within a revenue generating capacityExperience within sales and commercial contracts Some knowledge or experience of club environments and working with membership committees Salary Competitive salary based on experience, alongside benefits including club membership and Kiwi saver contributions.
