Nelson Hospital invites motivated and dedicated applicants to join our team as a Cardiac Sonographer Trainee with a pathway to becoming a certified Cardiac Sonographer. This role is an incredible opportunity for someone passionate about healthcare to gain hands-on experience in cardiac imaging while contributing to the healthcare facility. As a Cardiac Sonographer trainee, you will:
Assist in performing echocardiograms and other cardiac imaging procedures under supervision, following best practice protocols.
Develop skills in operating ultrasound equipment to obtain high-quality images for diagnostic purposes.
Work closely with cardiologists, sonographers, and healthcare staff to support patient assessment and diagnoses.
Prepare patients for procedures, explain processes, and ensure their comfort and safety throughout.
Maintain accurate records of imaging procedures, ensuring all data is recorded and stored according to hospital standards.
Participate in ongoing training, workshops, and educational sessions to expand your knowledge and technical skills in cardiac sonography.
Ensure all equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and cleaned in compliance with hospital protocols.
Actively contribute to a collaborative team environment, supporting Nelson Hospital's commitment to quality care.
Please note that as part of the trainee position, the successful candidate will be required to live in Dunedin for the first 12 months of their training. This is an essential component of the training programme to provide a comprehensive foundation in cardiac sonography through hands-on experience.
You will work Monday to Friday, routine hours with no on-call. The full-time equivalent salary range for a Cardiac Sonographer trainee working 80 hours a week is $80,000 Step 1 based on the current APEX Sonographer Collective Agreement, dependent on skills, experience, and registration in NZ.

The ideal applicant will:
Have an appropriate undergraduate degree.
Have current registration in the scope of practice - Trainee Sonographer with the NZMRT Board.
Work towards completing a postgraduate ultrasound programme within the timeframe set by the University and Health NZ Nelson Marlborough.
Participate in both practical and theory-based training as required in order to meet the standards of the department and the University.
Participate in clinical exchanges with other Ultrasound Departments in either the Public or Private Sector within NZ.
Have strong communication and teamwork skills.
The successful candidate must be eligible to work in New Zealand or hold a valid NZ work visa at the time of applying.
