Assistant Manager - Laboratory

Laboratory & Technical Services (Science & Technology) Waimea Plant Laboratories (WPL) is a division of the Waimea Group (Waimea Nurseries) with an aim to be the leading Tissue Culture laboratory in New Zealand. WPL has an existing workforce of 16 staff, both full and part time who have a long-standing history with the business. This role will be responsible for supporting the Manager – Laboratory with the day-to-day operations of our Lab to ensure effective planning, resourcing and processes are in place to achieve output goals. Strong production process skills and proven people management experience are important for success in this role with a 'hands-on' approach to daily tasks. Key responsibilities include: To oversee the efficient production of quality plantlets by tissue culture propagation Daily planning, scheduling and implementation of production activities, leading and coordinating our team. Train staff in the correct techniques and practices for their role as detailed in any relevant standard operating procedures. Applying a model of continuous improvement to utilise or create efficiencies to improve plant growth. Lead and direct teams of permanent and fixed term staff. Responsibility for best practice health, safety and environmental processes of the division. Actively monitor staff to ensure quality standards are met. Our ideal candidate will have: Proven Leadership experience with an exceptional ability to lead and motivate production teams will be critical for this position. Previous experience in a horticultural environment or a relevant tertiary level horticultural qualification is preferred but is not essential. A full NZ driving licence. A positive attitude.
