He angitutanga | About the role With a large variety of recreation, historic, and biodiversity assets to manage, we are on the lookout for a skilled professional who can ensure that our assets are being managed and maintained to a safe standard for public and staff use. As an Asset Inspector with the Department of Conservation, you will play a critical role in the maintenance of our facilities and protecting our natural environment. You will be responsible for verifying that our assets such as tracks, huts, and structures are up to standard. You will manage your inspection programme while working with district offices to help provide support and assistance to meet national and regional targets. This role will see you support the Southern South Island Region and in particular, the Te Anau District and Fiordland National Park. In this area you'll be required to inspect assets in some very challenging terrain such as the Dusky Track but also some of the most iconic sites in Aotearoa such as the Milford Great Walk. As an Asset Inspector, you will be required to spend, at times, multiple nights away and often in back country huts but also have the ability to travel across the region and Aotearoa to support the wider Inspection team when required. Nga pukenga me nga wheako | Skills and experience To succeed in this role, you will need to have a passion for conservation or recreation in the outdoors, as well as outdoor experience, excellent fitness, and self-awareness. You should also have some practical experience with the types of assets that you would be assessing. Having a trade qualification or experience in backcountry structure building will be advantageous but not essential due to the training provided. Above all, you should be an organised, self-starter who is passionate about making a difference. If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you: Experience with reporting and data entry using mobile phone apps and computer systems. Comfortable working in the back country, often alone and for overnight trips. Excellent communication skills and the ability to build relationships with a diverse range of people, including DOC staff, external stakeholders, and community groups. The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Strong time management and task prioritisation skills. A strong health and safety focus, including familiarity with safety systems and processes. Full New Zealand driver's licence.
