It has established itself in one of the leading innovators in traditional Maori performing arts training. Founded in 1983 by Tama Huata with the support of a dynamic team, Takitimu has been the pioneer in this emerging field. It was the first to offer performing arts training through government employment programmes in 1984 and then went on to establish the first training modules in music, sound engineering, and arts administration. In 1995 Takitimu was the first institution to offer a degree in Maori Performing Arts.What makes Takitimu so innovative in this field is its unique learning environment incorporating a Kohanga Reo, Kura Kaupapa, Wharekura and Wananga based programmes. It provides seamless education for people of all ages in an environment where the needs of children and adults are catered for. Takitimu offers a Diploma in Nga Toi Maori: (Maori Performing Arts) up to Level 7. Its programmes are practical, teaching methods are supportive of all learning styles and students work alongside professionals on theatre tours, music and sports events, exhibitions, displays and marae restoration projects.About the roleThe function of the Academic Director is to ensure that all of the Wananga recognized courses are delivered to the highest standards of excellence and meet the requirements of all appropriate stakeholders especially, but not limited to, the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), Ministry of Education (MOE) and the New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA).This function also includes responsibility for the standardized reporting requirements of these stakeholders.Benefits and perksAt Te Wananga Whare Tapere o Takitimu all employees benefit from working within a unique kaupapa that encompasses womb to tomb learning for the ages of 0 - 65+All employees of Takitimu have the opportunity to work alongside national and international artists and may at times be given the opportunity to travel nationally and internationally. Skills and experienceThe Academic Director will need to have skills and experience in administering and managing the following areas;Academic PlanningAcademic Evaluative processesData input and analysisAcademic BudgetingAcademic ResourcingAcademic Professional Development programmes for StaffSupervision and management of a teamStudent outcomes and pathwaysKnowledge, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:Well developed interpersonal skills both oral and written essential.Able to follow instructions and give instructions to a team of peopleSPECIAL APTITUDES:An understanding and appreciation of the Performing Arts & Arts Industry.An understanding and appreciation of cultural issues.An understanding and appreciation of local marae protocol.An ability to relate to a wide variety of people and cultures.An ability to relate to people of all ages.An ability to prioritise.An ability to cope with pressure.An ability to work unsupervised.
