Purpose of Position: The purpose of the Youth Pastor role is to be the key leader of the congregation's Youth Ministry and point person for Youth Ministry liaison with the broader Knox church faith community.
This will involve carrying out the tasks listed below, in collaboration with the Youth Ministry leadership team.
Spiritual Development: Support youth in developing a personal relationship with God and growing as disciples through prayer, worship, fellowship and study of the Bible.
Plan and facilitate youth-oriented teaching and large and small group discussions.
Ministry Coordination: Plan and organise regular youth-focused activities, events and biannual camps, to create an environment conducive to spiritual growth and fellowship of young people.Collaborate with other Knox church leaders to effectively involve those leaders and other volunteers in supporting and developing youth ministry.Relationship Building and Pastoral Care: Build strong relationships with youth by actively participating in their lives and showing care and interest, and offer or arrange for them emotional and spiritual support when the need for this is identified.
Mentoring and Leadership Development: Identify and nurture potential youth leaders by providing programmes to equip them with leadership skills, involving the wider church leadership as appropriate.Communication: Maintain effective communication channels with youth, parents, and the broader congregation regarding upcoming events, updates, and ministry opportunities, including through the use of social media and other platforms for outreach.Administration and Budgeting: Manage the budget allocated for youth ministry events, resources, and activities.Keep accurate records of attendance, participation, and feedback from youth-related events.Safety and Child Protection: Ensure that youth ministry activities comply with legal requirements and Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand policies and guidelines for the protection of young people, providing a safe environment for all youth participants.Ideal Person SpecificationThe person filling the role will ideally have the following attributes: Be a follower of Christ, demonstrated by a personal commitment to spiritual disciplines and service in a local church.Have a passion for evangelising and discipling the youth of today.Experience in working alongside young people, including in youth ministryExperience and skill in leading and equipping ministry teams, focusing particularly on the development of both the group as a whole and individuals within itA reputation for being a team player, being teachable and willing to learn.
Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, with the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships and credibility with a wide range of individuals.Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively (both orally and in writing) with a wide range of audiencesExcellent organisation, administrative, and coordination skills with the ability to plan, set priorities and meet deadlines.Preferably undertaken some theological study Functional Relationships:Internal: Knox Ministry team Youth Ministry Leadership Team Administration team Children's ministry leaders External: Presbytery Youth Ministry Nature of EmploymentThe role is offered as an ongoing, up to full-time, position.
The position reports to the Knox Church Minister.
The role requires significant work outside regular office hours, with Sunday morning and early evening, being when the main youth ministry events occur, and some other evening and weekend work also being involved.
Location of workWork will primarily be undertaken on the Knox church site (574 High Street, Lower Hutt) but some work will be required at other locations for special events, such as camps.
Nature of work The role predominantly involves leading, planning and organising youth programmes and events, including teaching and discipling, games, and outdoor activities; one-on-one mentoring; and supporting youth ministry volunteer leaders and their development.
Required work clearancesThe successful applicant will need to have the right to work in New Zealand and hold, or obtain, police vetting clearance.
