Job Description: Writing ConsultantPosition Purpose: The purpose of the position is to encourage and support Massey University students to be independent learners and develop specific academic skills. This is delivered on an individual basis as well as in small and larger groups. This is not a proofreading role, but a role to support students to develop the skills they need to achieve success.Department: Centre for Learner SuccessLocation: Palmerston NorthReports to: Manager, Student Learning SupportResponsible for: Nil.Delegations: Nil.Key relationships:Learning AdvisorsPre-reading CoordinatorDisability SupportLibraryAcademic StaffMaori and Pacific SupportHealth and SafetyAccountabilities:Individual Support: Advising and assisting individual undergraduate and postgraduate students, both domestic and international, on writing and other academic skills to support them to achieve success and become independent learners.Group Support: Assist if/as required with the support of a range of embedded, as well as generic, learning support programmes, both online and face-to-face.Administration: Compile and maintain accurate records of student contacts and other activities.Professional Development: Participate in appropriate opportunities, courses, and programmes for professional development.Qualifications and Experience:Qualifications:Master's qualification is essential.A thesis-based PhD is highly desirable.A recognised teaching qualification is highly desirable.Experience:Experience in teaching or providing academic learning support for a cohort of adult students.Experience in assessing learning needs and providing appropriate support to aid skills development.Teaching small groups and working one-to-one with students.Working in a blended/online teaching and learning environment.Experience teaching English to speakers of other languages is desirable.Experience in working with internal and distance students.Attributes:Competency in, or a desire and willingness to undertake professional development in, Te Reo Maori, Tikanga and Te Tiriti principles.Understand the current challenges in higher education.Motivated, initiative with a demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.Capabilities - Behaviour:Ability to establish a rapport with students and to work collegially with other staff members.Highly developed oral and written communication skills.Excellent organisational and time management skills.Experienced in supporting a diverse range of students including Maori, Pacific, international and new migrants, disabled and neurodivergent individuals.Knowledge of providing accessible and inclusive academic support.Capabilities - Technical:A high level of computer literacy and proven proficiency in a Windows environment is essential.Ability to provide numeracy support is highly desirable.Excellent academic writing skills.Excellent speed-reading skills (with a high level of comprehension).Ability to develop and deliver learning and study skills programmes both online and face-to-face.Excellent understanding of academic writing (including assignment structure and focus, academic style and presentation, use of sources, and referencing conventions).Pre-employment checks:Requirement to pass a Qualifications Validation Check.Requirement to pass a Criminal and Traffic Convictions (Security) Check performed by the Ministry of Justice.A safety check in accordance with the Vulnerable Children Act 2014 is required.
