The Whakapapa whanau are a small but ambitious team, running year-round operations on the northern slopes of Mt Ruapehu.
In winter, from June until October, this includes a world-class ski area.
In summer, from December until April, this includes our summer sightseeing operation, heroing our iconic Sky Waka gondola.
Each year we welcome hundreds of thousands of manuhiri (guests) to Whakapapa, many with life-long connections to the maunga (mountain) and surrounding region, some even third or fourth generation.Mo te tunga | About the roleWe're looking for experienced Ski Patrollers to join our Safety Services team this winter season (June to October).
As a Ski Patroller, you'll play a key role in ensuring the safety of our guests while managing Whakapapa's unique terrain.
You'll be responsible for hazard assessment and mitigation, from avalanche control to cliff and waterfall hole assessments.
Accident prevention, delivering high-quality first aid care, and providing guest services are at the heart of this role.Key responsibilities include:Maintaining safety strategies across all ski area terrain.Maximising the safe terrain for our guests every day.Providing specialist emergency care and transport to guests.Assisting in avalanche control and snow safety duties.This is a fantastic opportunity for experienced Ski Patrollers who thrive in the outdoors regardless of the conditions, enjoy diverse work environments, and love contributing to the safety and enjoyment of ski guests.
Our Ski Patrol team is a tight-knit group that values both professional development and the well-being of our members.This is a full-time opportunity for our Winter Season, which operates 7 days per week from June to October.
Full-time employees are rostered 30 plus hours per week.A wide range of mountain skills are required to effectively manage Whakapapa's terrain; you will be working in a challenging yet rewarding environment.
Whether you're a newly qualified ski patroller or an experienced professional, we welcome applicants who are ready to take on a dynamic and demanding environment with a focus on safety and teamwork.All applicants must meet the following requirements:Pre-hospital emergency care (PHEC) or equivalent, with experience working as a first responder in an outdoor setting.Avalanche Risk Management level 5 (or equivalent).Previous Ski Patroller experience or extensive knowledge of Whakapapa ski area terrain.Experience in the Snowsports Safety Services industry.A self-reflective mindset with an ability to give and receive constructive feedback.A passion for providing exceptional guest services.Highly reliable with the demonstrated ability to contribute positively to a team-oriented workplace culture.NZQA Working at Heights certification.Due to Whakapapa's unique terrain and working environment, extensive mountain skills are required for our senior Patrollers; in addition, we seek applicants with:A minimum of 5+ seasons of experience as a Ski Patroller, or a strong understanding of Whakapapa's terrain, avalanche routes, and snow safety practices.Proven experience contributing to snow safety programmes and promoting best practices within a team.Gear up for the ultimate work adventure at Whakapapa.
