This full-time, term position is for a GS-0486-11 Wildlife Biologist in Yellowstone National Park. It is a non-supervisory role, reporting directly to the Bison Program Manager, and supports the management and conservation of bison. The incumbent will work with a team of wildlife biologists, biological science technicians, volunteers, and indigenous cooperators.The primary objective of bison management and conservation is to mitigate the transboundary movements of bison from the National Park into the surrounding State of Montana. The incumbent will assist with implementing a brucellosis quarantine program. This program involves holding bison in captive pens within the National Park, testing them for brucellosis, and transferring them to indigenous communities upon completion of the program.The position requires coordination with federal, state, non-governmental, and tribal partners. Additionally, the incumbent will conduct research and monitor the demographics, movements, genetics, and health of the park's bison population.Major DutiesDesigns, develops, tests, and implements statistically valid data collection protocols for monitoring bison genetics, vital rates, and disease occurrence.Conducts analysis of genetic, demographic and disease data and determines and documents the significance of findings.Prepares management and scientific reports regarding the results of monitoring, research, and management activities.Develops and maintains liaisons and effective working relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, tribes, and the public in order to facilitate cooperative stewardship of bison.Conducts a restoration project to relocate disease-free bison to start or augment other herds.RequirementsConditions of EmploymentU.S. Citizenship required.Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment.This position is subject to drug testing based on the collateral duty requiring firearms in the back-country or other locations for non-law enforcement reasons such as protection from animals.You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties.You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1 night per month.You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.QualificationsAll qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/23/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.Individual Occupational Requirements 0486 SeriesBasic Requirements:Degree: biological science that included:At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology;At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects;At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.ORCombination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.To Qualify For This Position At The GS-11 Grade LevelYou Must Possess At Least One Of The Following Minimum Qualifications By Close Of The Announcement:EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service.OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three-years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree.OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.Additional InformationThe National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
