Wellington ICU Fellow (approved for CICM transition year trainees) New Zealand Government – Wellington, North Island About the role Intensive Care Fellow / CICM Transition Year Fellow / Senior Registrar 12 month position, starting 28 July 2025 (January start not available in 2025) Wellington Hospital/Wakefield Hospital salaries are calculated based on relevant previous years of experience and the average weekly hours of work as set out in the relevant run description. Please note that the existing run description has been attached as a guideline only. We anticipate opening our additional 12 bed HDU at the beginning of 2025. This will necessitate a change to our current roster (and an increase in the number of registrars participating in this roster). This roster is currently in draft format, and will be sent to affected registrars once it is formalised. There may possibly also be a change to the fellow roster. The roster change will follow the RDA and STONZ principles regarding change management (including acceptance by the majority of those affected). However, the principles of the fellow functioning at SMO level for the majority of shifts will still apply. Wellington ICU provides tertiary Intensive Care services for over one million people in central New Zealand covering a geographic radius of 300 kilometres, including the lower North Island and upper South Island. We support six other public hospitals that have Intensive Care Units and one hospital that does not. To manage such a large area, we run a busy Flight Retrieval Service with the capability to provide Intensive Care-level retrievals around the clock. The ICU is a 24-bed unit providing general intensive care as well as supporting sub-speciality services including cardiothoracics & cardiology, neurosurgery, paediatric surgery, and trauma. Our service is strongly consultant-led, with consultant ward rounds performed three times a day on weekdays and twice a day during the weekend. We admit almost 2000 patients every year, of which 40% are elective. Wellington ICU 14 Registrar positions, and four fellow positions (suitable for CICM transition year fellows), along with four additional Wakefield / Wellington ICU registrars with a non-clinical fellowship attached. The four fellow positions fulfil the College of Intensive Care Medicine requirements for Transition year training. The opportunity to gain experience in ICU non-clinical roles including education, simulation, research, trauma, aeromedical, and echocardiography. Provides a regional helicopter/fixed wing based retrieval service for central NZ in which our registrars are involved. A strong research focus with opportunities to be involved in critical care research that will change practice around the world. An excellent teaching program with multidisciplinary input led by senior clinicians, regular simulation training, and the Wellington Intensive Care Medicine course. Always have at least two registrars rostered on, ensuring that more junior registrars are well supported. About you Suitable for doctors who are final year trainees in the CICM training program, or are at fellowship level for other related specialty programs, or are looking for post-training Fellowship opportunities. Candidates should be working at an advanced level within ICU as this role partakes in the after-hours roster working on call in a supervisory capacity (supported and supervised by our ICU specialists). You must have eligibility for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. You will need to be a NZ or Australian citizen or resident, or have an appropriate visa to be eligible to live and work in NZ.
