The role of a Principal Specialist - Water Engineer at Waitaki District Council involves providing expert technical advice on water, wastewater, and stormwater systems. The primary focus is to guide policy development, asset planning, and operational efficiency. The role requires collaboration with various internal teams and external partners to ensure strategic objectives are met and infrastructure is well-maintained.
As a key advisor, the Water Engineer plays a pivotal role in shaping water-related projects, ensuring compliance with industry trends, regulations, and best practices. You will also provide support in risk management, contract oversight, and decision-making processes related to water services.
A key aspect of the role is maintaining up-to-date knowledge of water engineering advancements and integrating these into Council frameworks, ensuring Waitaki's water systems are robust, sustainable, and future-ready. This position does not involve direct reporting but includes significant leadership and mentoring responsibilities across the organisation.

The preferred candidate will have:
Relevant Qualifications and Experience: A tertiary qualification in water engineering or a related discipline, with a minimum of 10 years' industry experience. You will bring deep expertise in water and wastewater treatment, hydraulics, and stormwater management, with a track record of delivering complex engineering projects.
Technical and Legislative Knowledge: Strong understanding of water engineering principles and a proven ability to interpret and apply legislative requirements. You'll be adept at ensuring compliance with national policies and regulations, contributing to the development of strategic and operational plans.
Leadership and Communication Skills: A collaborative leader who excels at building relationships across teams and sectors. You will be able to clearly articulate technical information, influence stakeholders, and drive initiatives that support Council's strategic objectives.
Problem-Solving and Innovation: A forward-thinker with the ability to address technical challenges and propose sustainable, innovative solutions. You will keep abreast of emerging trends and technologies, ensuring Council's water services are future-ready.

The salary for this position will commence between $94,573 and $111,263 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
