At one of the great big cable networks, there's a full-on push in the works to get tons and tons of its content into the audience's hands via streaming to all myriad of devices. They're building out a mega-talented and highly driven team of superstars to make it all happen, and there's an open slot for somebody just like you — somebody whose specialty is the optimization of the audio/video codec, somebody who's a true go-getter always looking to learn new things. Bring both your awesome technical prowess and your deep passion for kickass video experiences, and help this company continue to wow its audience.
At the heart of it, you'll deliver state-of-the-art digital video playback experiences by optimizing audio and video codec usage. You know what that all entails: compression work, using AV1, nailing down SMTPE and W3C standards — essentially plying your special tools to give users the absolute very best playback experiences possible. But in some ways, you should think of this as a hybrid role between QA automation and regular development, because you'll be called on to incorporate feedback loops, data-collection functions and automated checks and tests to establish and measure against specific KPIs. (You'll write Scala code for performance testing).
As secondary duties, you'll work with Digital Rights folks to make sure you're studio-compliant. You'll help import content into the company's digital systems, both manually and automated. You'll help build out a content encoding pipeline. And you'll troubleshoot streaming challenges.
Oh, and there'll be plenty of collaboration with (and thus exposure to) people beyond your immediate group, both external (CDN and DRM vendors) and internal (DevOps and others).
All told, you're approaching something like five years into this, having worked to create playback experiences on a wide range of networks and devices at one or more CDN providers. That degree you earned in computer science (or perhaps video production) was nothing more than a jumping-off point for you; you've continuously gobbled up coding experiences, languages and platforms, putting in years of real-world work involving FFmpeg, Elemental, C++, Java, Python, Azure, Selenium, Appium and more. What you don't yet know, you're planning on learning.
All that technical skill is quite fine and dandy, of course, but it's fully matched by your honest-to-God passion for high-quality video experiences, a thing that hasn't diminished one bit over the years. You still perk up your ears at nicely synced, high-quality audio, and you drool just a little bit when you click a Play icon and are rewarded by the quick and responsive start-up of a lovely HDR stream.
