Trainee Marine Engineer

This is an exciting opportunity to further your career, learn on the job, and from the best while fishing around New Zealand, Antarctica, and the Western Pacific.You will be a vital part of the crew, learning about the maintenance and functionality of the ship's engines, boilers, deck machinery, electrical, hydraulic, refrigeration, and sewage systems in accordance with Talley's policies, local and MNZ regulations.As part of the role, you will assist the chief and second engineer with repairing and maintaining the ship's engineering system.
You will also be required to complete daily tasks and documentation to keep the systems running smoothly.You will work towards obtaining a MEC5 as part of our training programme, with opportunities to progress within the company.You would be at sea for 4-6 weeks at a time, which means you will be working every day during the trip.
You will be scheduled to one trip on, one trip off – and while you're at home relaxing on your trip off, you'll still be fully paid.Conditions can be challenging, so being fit and healthy is a must.
While onboard, you will have a comfortable cabin, with an ensuite, and most of our fleet have an onboard gym, WIFI, and plenty of space to relax in your downtime.Key ResponsibilitiesAssist with all routine maintenance of machinery and equipment.Study all systems on board for the electrical power, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, water, sewage systems, and electrical equipment, to gain knowledge for maintenance.Perform maintenance and repairs as directed by the Chief Engineer.Skills/Experience NeededMechanical & Trade certified experience is preferred.Experience in stainless steel tig welding, basic Hydraulics and Pneumatics is preferred but training can be given.Problem-solving skills and a "can do" attitude.Motivated and energetic team players who get on well with others, with a proven work history.A pre-employment medical, including dental, will be required.Proof of New Zealand citizenship or permanent residence.Talley's is committed to Health & Safety in all our workplaces and all our vessels are drug-free.
