Trainee Marine Engineer

Details of the offer

Our deep sea fishing opportunities offer great challenges and rewards.

If you are looking for more than just a 9-5 job, deep sea fishing with Talley's offers great challenges and rewards. You'll earn great money and receive up to four months' leave per year when you join our hard-working deep sea fishing crew. Right now, we're looking for trainee engineers for our deep sea trawlers.
Talley's is proudly New Zealand owned and operated. We run five deep sea fishing vessels with primarily Kiwi crews bringing the best New Zealand seafood to the world. We're looking for experienced crew members who are interested in a career in deep sea fishing with Talley's.
You'll earn great money on board our fleet of modern vessels, all with comfortable cabins, usually with an ensuite. Most of our fleet also has an onboard gym, WIFI, and plenty of space to relax in your downtime.
When you're out at sea, living costs are low. We provide ongoing specialized training opportunities that equip you with skills and qualifications for a successful career.
This is an exciting opportunity to further your career and learn from the best while fishing around New Zealand, Antarctica, and the Western Pacific.
You will be a vital part of the crew, learning about the maintenance and functionality of the ship's engines, boilers, deck machinery, electrical, hydraulic, refrigeration, and sewage systems in accordance with Talley's policies, local, and MNZ regulations.
As part of the role, you will assist the chief and second engineer with repairing and maintaining the ship's engineering systems. You will also be required to complete daily tasks and documentation to keep the systems running smoothly.
You will work towards obtaining a MEC5 as part of our training programme, with opportunities to progress within the company.
You would be at sea for 4-6 weeks at a time, working every day during the trip. You will be scheduled to one trip on, one trip off – and while at home during your time off, you'll still be fully paid.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with all routine maintenance of machinery and equipment.
Study all systems on board for electrical power, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, water, sewage systems, and electrical equipment to gain knowledge for maintenance.
Perform maintenance and repairs as directed by the Chief Engineer.
Skills/Experience Needed:
Mechanical & Trade certified experience is preferred.
Experience in stainless steel TIG welding, basic hydraulics, and pneumatics is preferred, but training can be provided.
Problem-solving skills and a "can do" attitude.
Motivated and energetic team players who work well with others, with a proven work history.
Proof of New Zealand citizenship, permanent residence, or currently residing in New Zealand with a visa enabling you to work for a minimum of two years.
Talley's is committed to Health & Safety in all our workplaces, and all our vessels are drug-free. We carry out pre-employment and routine random drug testing for all our employees. You will also undergo a pre-employment medical check with our company doctor to ensure you are fit for sea.
