Details of the offer

Engage with iwi/hapu, the science community, and a range of internal and external stakeholders to improve understanding of terrestrial ecology.
- Do you love practical field roles delivering terrestrial biodiversity monitoring?
- Enjoy a role working with the community to achieve successful environmental outcomes?
Mo matou - About us
We are an enthusiastic bunch of people at Taranaki Regional Council, helping the region continue to be an enviable place to live, play and do business.
Our main office is based right in the centre of the region, under the Maunga (mountain), in Whakaahurangi (Stratford).
We have three beautiful gardens: Pukeiti, Tupare and Hollard Gardens. Many of our staff work on a daily basis around the region and we are a 35 minute commute from New Plymouth. This region allows you to have all the big city benefits whilst maintaining a rural lifestyle given the relatively quick ability to travel between our towns and the city.
Whakatakanga and whanonga pono - Mission and values
Our mission is to work for a thriving Taranaki by promoting the sustainable use, development and protection of our natural and physical resources, and advocating for the region's best interests.
We are committed to providing a service first approach to the public and regional community, and in doing so aim to continue to better the quality of our performance while working safely, sustaining effective communication and teamwork, having the initiative and right to make mistakes, holding accountability for improvement, being results-driven, and holding high job satisfaction.
Mo te tunga - About the role
We are looking for a Terrestrial Ecologist to join our Biodiversity team. Our Terrestrial Ecologist will be responsible for working collaboratively and cohesively within the Environment Services section to provide the Council with technical input, from a terrestrial ecology perspective, into biodiversity and biosecurity management functions. This includes technical input on operational biodiversity and biosecurity activities, implementing the council's biodiversity/biosecurity monitoring programmes, technical input into state of environment, compliance monitoring and resource consent investigations and policy and plan development.
The role encompasses engagement with iwi/hapu, the science community, and a range of internal and external stakeholders to improve understanding of terrestrial ecology. There is no typical day but expect to have plenty of variety. You'll be based in our office in Stratford so you can connect with your colleagues. However, you'll spend time out in the Taranaki region working with the many different community stakeholders. Effectively communicating terrestrial ecological information and advice to a range of audiences is a key aspect of this role.
Mou - About you
We like to set people up for success so you'll be a leading applicant if you have:
- studied and worked in the field of ecology
- confidence working in a range of outdoor environments
- excellent communication skills with emotional and cultural intelligence
- energy and enthusiasm to collaborate effectively as part of a team
- delivered projects as part of a team and can share your learnings with others
- confidence to collaborate and nurture great relationships with key stakeholders like iwi, hapu, media and community groups
- trained and are experienced in the use of all-terrain vehicles.

Taranaki Regional Council is a fantastic place to work!
We have great staff perks including:
