Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity We are inviting applications for the Technical Specialist position in the Virology department.
This position is permanent.
The Virology Molecular/COVID Unit is a high-workload area covering detection, viral load, genotyping, and drug resistance testing of various viruses on different clinical specimens using multiple platforms.
This Unit has had a major contribution to New Zealand's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This position requires flexibility as you will be participating in a roster.
You will be expected to be available for early, afternoon and late shifts Monday – Sunday and on-calls with appropriate rostered days off.
As a Technical Specialist, you will be: Working closely with the department's Scientist Unit Manager and the Section Leader to ensure laboratory compliance with ISO.
Managing day-to-day task distribution among staff.
Participating in and leading quality improvement programmes.
Ensuring processes and reports meet agreed timelines.
Creating and updating the documents and SOPs to reflect the most current practice.
Planning, performing, and documenting equipment maintenance according to the departmental protocols.
Participating in designing new assays and their validations.
Providing positive leadership showing a role model for professional accountability.
Training/teaching other staff in the speciality area as required.
Sharing of knowledge both internally and externally to LabPlus.
Maintaining and supporting communication within the team.

Nga Pukenga Motuhake | Important Skills The required qualifications and skills for this role include the following: Being registered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with a current Annual Practicing Certificate.
Experience in qPCR and Sanger Sequencing as essential for this role.
Experience with Next Generation Sequencing as preferred.
Excellent communication, speaking, and writing skills.
Good knowledge of analytical processes in Molecular Diagnostics.
Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality.
Troubleshooting with the ability to investigate the aberrant quality indicators, find the reasons, and be proactive in defining the solutions.
Management and organisational skills.
Excellent time management with a can-do attitude to work in a fast-paced and busy environment.
