The Biodiversity Group is dedicated to advancing conservation through our diverse teams focusing on biodiversity, recreation, community engagement, and visitor centres. Within this dynamic framework, the Plant Pathogens Team plays a crucial role in managing and responding to plant pathogen threats, including the Kauri Dieback programme and Myrtle Rust initiatives.

We are seeking a Plant Pathogens Specialist on a 12-month fixed-term/ secondment basis to provide expert technical advice, influence best practices, and ensure that our management of plant pathogens aligns with cutting-edge research and science. Your role will be pivotal in supporting DOC's efforts to protect New Zealand's unique ecosystems and biodiversity.
Key Responsibilities:

Offering specialist plant pathogen advice, support strategic prioritisation, and assist in the design and implementation of interventions.
Provide guidance on managing plant pathogens.
Support the design and delivery of DOC's surveillance and monitoring programmes related to plant pathogens, specifically for Kauri dieback disease.
Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with internal teams, whanau, hapu, iwi, and external stakeholders.
Facilitate the sharing of ideas and resources to achieve conservation outcomes.
Leading or supporting the creation and maintenance of tools and systems to enhance operational effectiveness and compliance with legislative requirements.
Managing and disseminating knowledge and information, ensuring it is current and accessible. Stay abreast of external trends and innovations.
Contributing to DOC's health and safety systems, promoting a safe and supportive work environment.

A graduate qualification in conservation or a related field, with technical experience in plant pathogens or biosecurity.
Proven expertise in designing and managing technical work, systems analysis, and statistical methods.
Exceptional communication skills, ability to build and maintain effective relationships, and a collaborative approach.
Demonstrated understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi, Maori Tikanga, and a commitment to high professional standards.
Strategic thinking, political savvy, resilience, curiosity, and a strong commitment to achieving ambitious goals.

The salary range for this position is $92,450 to $116,985 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience. You are encouraged to discuss secondment opportunities with your manager. Secondments should offer the opportunity to build capability in line with your development plan. You must seek the support of your line manager (minimum Tier 4) in writing before applying for a secondment opportunity and attach it to your application. Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
