The Smart Council Group is accountable for leading the evolution of Council's digital capabilities and helping Council become a fully digitally enabled enterprise that can deliver Council's vision for Wellington.
The Digital Innovation Team combines technology, collaboration and data to support the Council's key Long Term Plan priorities and challenges including transport, resilience, urban development, community safety and asset management.
The Digital Innovation team is a mix of technical and innovation skills that collaborates with internal Council teams, academia, central government, smart city networks domestically and internationally, mana whenua and the private sector. Current projects in our programme include:
Digital City Model capability (a 3D model of the city built in the Unreal Game engine) which shows data in a real-life context, unites people around the meaning and effect of proposed change, and tells visual stories of what was, is and could be.Traffic Counting Sensors - measuring traffic counts and analysing how people are moving across the city to inform city planning urban design, emergency response and city operations. It helps monitor and evaluate the impact of change.Au ake mahi |What you'll do
An opportunity now sits for someone to come in and lead this important mahi on a fixed term basis as our Team Leader Digital Innovation.
You will drive and lead the Digital Innovation programme - a hybrid role of thought leadership, team management and light touch project management. The role champions the combined focus of innovation, digital technology, and collaboration across the Council to maximise the benefits of digital investment and embed an innovation capability across the organisation.
You will be responsible for leading a team to establish programme governance, road mapping initiatives, investigate funding options, and support the delivery of initiatives through project management. A key focus for the programme includes leading the delivery and expansion of the Digital City Model capability across the organisation.
You will be naturally inquisitive about innovative technologies and making a difference to your city, able to think strategically while managing the detail, comfortable with ambiguity but skilled in defining scope and progressing work forward, have strong facilitation and stakeholder management skills, and be confident in leading a work programme.

Bringing a myriad of skills, encompassing exceptional interpersonal, communication and leadership qualities that foster and celebrates an inclusive and diverse team, you will have the ability to understand the strategic side of this role and to align to the direction the group is headed. This will involve:
Extensive experience in initiating and delivering innovation digital solutions that have improved business services and the customer experience.Demonstratable experience leading a high performing team.Experience in project coordination or project management.Experience presenting to and building strong working relationships with key stakeholders at all levels of organisations both internally and externallyEstablished ability to apply continuous improvement ideology and practice.Prior experience working in government, or a complex multi-disciplined environment.Ideally you will hold a bachelor's degree in either Public Policy, IT, GIS, City Planning, or Design Innovation with a minimum 5 years' experience working in the innovation or data sector.
