We are privileged to work with Nga Papatipu Runanga, stakeholders, and our wider community to protect Waitaha - our Canterbury region. As a Regional Council, we're responsible for environmental regulation and protection, community preparedness and response to hazards, and public transport.
The work of the Science Group at Environment Canterbury consists of providing environmental monitoring and data; and research and advice to internal and external customers. Drawing from different science disciplines, the Science Group plays a key role in informing decision making across most of the organisation including informing organisational strategic intent, processing of consents, our approach to compliance, responding to incidents, the development of plans, and measuring our progress towards regional and national environmental targets.
Reporting to the Hazards Science Manager, this role will lead a team to provide research and advice on contaminated land and waste management matters.
More about the role: Lead, coach, mentor, and develop direct reports.Develop and maintain fit for purpose work programmes and resources.Actively participate in committee and community working groups.Manage contracts & contractors fairly under the appropriate procurement guideline.Lead research on the impact of contaminated land & waste on Canterbury communities.Provide quality assurance of research reports & advice in the field of contaminated land and waste.Manage communications & enquiries on contaminated land & waste matters.From time to time, as required, the role may require work outside of normal work hours for emergency and flood response and to represent Environment Canterbury at meetings and events with partners, other agencies, and the community.
The indicative salary range for this role is $120,000 - $130,000 per annum depending on skills and experience. Permanent full-time 40 hours per week located at 200 Tuam Street, Christchurch.
As a technical leader of people, you'll juggle a hands-on role, along with your people leadership skills. You'll have experience in leading change, inspiring innovative thinking, influencing behaviour change, and adoption of new ways of working, with a strongly collaborative style.
You'll ideally have a Master (preferred) or Bachelor of Science degree in a contaminated land field along with relevant experience, together with technical experience in contaminated land and/or waste management work.
To enjoy this role, you'll have: Ability to lead and elevate team capability.Develop and maintain fit for purpose work programmes.Design and lead research on contaminated land issues within a Canterbury context.Procurement and management of contracts and contractors, including negotiation of services.Ability in forming and maintaining strong, collaborative working relationships.Establish connections and collaboration with Nga Runanga, in relation to environmental science, including data sovereignty.Lead, coach, mentor, and develop team members to create a high performing, engaged team.A strong understanding of contaminated land and/or waste management issues in Canterbury and involvement in leading research projects.Understanding of the Resource Management Act requirements in relation to contaminated land and waste management.A commitment to and an understanding of te ao Maori, awareness of the evolving obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi, together with experience of applying this in a workplace setting, including the ability to lead work that requires engagement with iwi.Our values underpin everything we do.
