RESPONSIBILITIES The Teacher on Call is responsible for the delivery of Waldorf education in a manner that is aligned with Waldorf pedagogical practices, grade-specific Scope and Sequence expectations, and the requirements of the BC Ministry of Education, as set forth in the BC curriculum and by the province's five-stage approach to in-class instruction.
The Teacher on Call makes a significant commitment to their classes, in bringing a rich and solidly academic curriculum to the class as a whole. When teaching in a class regularly or over a longer period of time, this relationship involves creating a productive working relationship with the parents/guardians, as well as a cooperative relationship with colleagues.
Teachers on Call are subject to the requirements of the NWS Teacher's Handbook, which includes all Faculty agreements and applicable school policies.
Pedagogical Responsibilities and Duties Arrive on campus each day in advance of the 8:25 am start and remain on campus for the full duration of the school day. Prompt and regular attendance is an essential duty and responsibility of this position.
Prepare, teach and assess all grade-level main lesson blocks and other grade-related periods as assigned, such as: painting, form drawing, math practice periods, language arts practice periods, and short instructional (SI) periods.
Develop and maintain a safe, harmonious social environment for the students in alignment with the school's Policies.
Work proactively to support students by requesting the need for additional student supports, such as developmental assessments ("Extra Lesson"), psycho-educational assessments, auditory/visual assessments, etc.
Model the Communication policy to students, parents, and colleagues.
Create and maintain a grade-appropriate, aesthetic and orderly classroom.
Adapt to any of BC's five stages of In-classroom/Distance Learning instruction, as mandated by the Ministry of Education, and implemented in a manner that has been agreed to by the Faculty.
Administrative/Professional Responsibilities Document student progress primarily through the use of narrative descriptions in accordance with both Waldorf and Ministry of Education curriculum standards, using the provided online reporting templates.
Communicate in a timely manner with parents/guardians on student progress.
Record incident and accident reports.
Additional/Cultural Responsibilities All teachers share responsibility for the well-being of the school. Aspects of this responsibility include:
Maintaining and striving for an openness to understand and work with the anthroposophical underpinnings of Waldorf education and child development.
Teachers on Call are also expected to: Work in year-round outdoor weather conditions for extended periods of time.
Operate a computer for inputting the hours as well as year overviews, term descriptions, student reports and conducting regular correspondence.
Frequently liaise with parents/guardians, colleagues and administrators.
Actively supervise, both during indoor and outdoor, students with focus, even when distractions are present.
Contribute positively to a healthy social life amongst faculty, staff, parents, administration and Board.
