The salary range for this position is $79,656 to $100,639. This is a permanent, full-time position based in Pipiriki with accommodation available. About the RoleThe Supervisor Biodiversity is a unique and exciting role that forms part of the district leadership team. It is responsible for the leadership and delivery of the biodiversity work program for the Whanganui National Park and surrounding areas within our District.
You will supervise and manage a team, planning and organising the work program that encompasses the Whanganui National Park and traversing the iconic Whanganui River to protect the unique landscape of Te Awa Tupua. A major component of your work will be helping your team to develop and succeed in their own work. In this Supervisor position, you need to have an eye for detail, a willingness to work towards continuous improvement, and plenty of drive and initiative. Above all, the health, safety, and wellbeing of staff will be your highest priority.
Key ResponsibilitiesEnsuring the work your team is carrying out is sized correctly for their capacity and delivered efficiently.Coaching your team and inspiring a positive work culture within your team.Establishing and growing positive working relationships within the local community including whanau, hapu, and iwi.Communicating with a wide range of people at various levels throughout the organisation and externally.Skills and ExperienceAs the Supervisor for the Biodiversity team, you ideally have an interest in delivering on conservation values that are for the long-term improvements of our flora and fauna. We're looking for a positive, outgoing personality, someone who enjoys working within a close-knit team. Your ability to think strategically and act operationally will contribute to the successful planning and delivery of work programs across the district.
There can be times when the workload will be high so you will need to be able to remain calm and focused and work well under pressure. You will be confident interacting with people from all walks of life. Having an understanding of the Iwi partners in the Whanganui district, te reo and tikanga Maori could be advantageous to building those relationships to integrate amongst the local communities to understand their values with our work.

Great communication skills and the ability to get on with people.Excellent planning and organisational skills, with attention to detail.Strong leadership and focus on health, safety, and wellbeing.Personal attributes including resilience, a great attitude, and flexibility.Ability to adapt to changing circumstances when organising field programs.High fitness level with backcountry experience.Digitally savvy with the ability to learn new systems quickly.Ability to manage the shifting priorities of the team and adjust own priorities accordingly.Proven leadership experience with the ability to develop and lead staff.Understanding of the implications of te Tiriti o te Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) on today's society and conservation.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Emotional intelligence, and ability to have courageous conversations.High personal and professional standards.Accountability for the success of the team.Demonstrated ability to plan, monitor and report on work delivery.A current full New Zealand Driver's Licence.Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with iwi, stakeholders, and land-owners.Previous experience engaging and working in partnership with iwi and mana whenua.An understanding of the work of the Department and how it contributes to New Zealand's future sustainability.Knowledge or experience in field conservation management would be advantageous.What's in it for you?An opportunity to live, work, and play in the Whanganui district which offers a great lifestyle with tramping, fishing, hunting, and many other outdoor pursuits available on the doorstep of this family-friendly town.
