Spend your summer at Waitaki District Council
Waitaki District Council is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for our 23,000 residents and creating a thriving, sustainable community. With a committed team of professionals, we provide essential services 24/7, ensuring the wellbeing of our district. We manage infrastructure, environmental conservation, community development, and regulatory services, responding to thousands of community interactions each year while proactively addressing local needs and challenges.

Our Summer Student Programme provides a fantastic opportunity for final-year high school students and 1st/2nd-year university students to gain valuable work experience in Local Government. The 9-week paid internship runs from 25 November to 7 February, with a two-week break over Christmas. During this time, students will be immersed in a specific area of the council, working on real projects that support the community and enhance their skills.
Placements are available in the following departments:
Arts, Culture & Heritage
Digital Services
Assets Planning
Infrastructure Network Team
Community Engagement
Heritage & Planning
Infrastructure Operations
People & Capability
Students will be placed in one area for the entire 9 weeks, allowing for a deep dive into day-to-day operations and project work.
