Summer Ambassador

Details of the offer

If a desk job isn't for you, then this job might just be!
Summer Ambassadors work hard (rain or shine!) educating campers and visitors on sustainable camping practices, providing feedback about camping areas across the district, keeping reserves clean and free from litter, collecting data on visitors, reporting issues and assisting with communication to council officers as required. Positions are available in Queenstown and Wanaka.
While camping education is an important focus, the role also involves providing important summer safety messages to all visitors, including water safety, water usage, alcohol restrictions, reserve closures and much more.
You'll take a community-focused approach to work and be friendly and helpful by nature. You thrive on working outdoors in our beautiful district and take an interest in the environment, sustainability and tourism.
This role promotes and supports the Tiaki Promise. Tiaki means to care for people and place, and the Tiaki Promise is a commitment to care for Aotearoa New Zealand now and for future generations, regardless of whether you live here or are visiting. The Tiaki Promise commits to:
Travel safely, showing care and consideration for all
Care for land, sea and nature, treading lightly and leaving no trace
Respect culture, travelling with an open heart and mind.
Responsibilities
Engage and educate campers about the 'dos and don'ts' of camping in the district with a focus on encouraging compliance with local rules and sustainable camping practices.
Routine litter collections - keep local reserves looking clean and tidy!
Providing friendly and helpful information to all visitors, including sharing up-to-date summer safety and warning information.
Work with Emergency Management Otago to support education and response coordination for any emergency events that could impact visitors to our region, particularly campers.
Promote local businesses that provide commercial camping grounds or holiday parks.
Distribute leaflets and other sources of information to campers, local information centres, commercial businesses or community hubs.
Collect data on campers by conducting visitor surveys.
Monitor campers' compliance around the district, reporting back findings to council officers.
Responding to community requests for signage or education opportunities.
Submit regular reports detailing your findings and experiences to the Responsible Camping Programme Manager, including detailing interactions and photographs where appropriate.
