Mo Tenei Turanga Mahi - About the Role
The prime purpose of this role is to work with learners to enhance their experience at Ara. This includes helping to clarify their needs, create solutions and to match and refer those to the supports and services that Ara provides and/or to refer to external support providers. This will include positively responding to enquiries from learners and their whanau (i.e. Scholarships, studylink, hardship, careers, accommodation and student events or groups) and supporting those people through finding solutions. The advisor will work alongside learners and support them to identify and access solutions that enable them to develop and succeed. The Student Advisor will be responsible for working with students from diverse backgrounds, cultures, outlooks, experiences, and nationalities studying across Ara departments.
Nga Pukenga Me Nga Wheako - Skills/Experience
Tertiary qualification (preferably Degree) or relative experience.
Demonstrated experience working effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
Evidence of skills in working with Maori whanau, iwi, hapu and/or community networks and individuals, groups or agencies providing support and/or services.
Excellent communication skills especially listening and questioning.
Experience and thorough understanding of and commitment to high quality service provision.
An understanding of both the academic, career and pastoral needs of tertiary students.
An understanding of the demands of a tertiary learning environment, particularly as this impacts Maori and Pacific learners.
Ability to facilitate joint problem solving in the tertiary education environment.
A collaborative working style whilst able to work independently.
Administrative experience, including sound computer skills in MS Office and electronic communication applications.
Effective organisational skills
Excellent time management
Administrative skills and experience including project/event co-ordination.
