The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) is looking to appoint both interested and experienced individuals working in either industry or academia to join our various working groups within the Developing Career Standing Committee of RINA's Council.
Membership to the main Developing Careers Standing Committee, alongside its three sub-committees, is open to Corporate Members (MRINA and FRINA), Non-Corporate Members (AMRINA, ARINA, Student Members) and representatives from our Corporate Partners and employers.
We encourage applications from a diverse range of potential candidates in terms of, but not exclusively, gender, age, disability and ethnicity, as well as reflecting the geographical spread and practice areas of our membership.
The standing committees aim to be diverse and have appropriate representation from across the maritime industry or academia sectors.
We encourage applications from individuals with experience in or interest in initiatives such as, but not exclusive to, graduate support, student engagement, career development, widening participation, STEM activity, Women in Science / STEM, LGBTQ+ Networks, BAME Networks, and Disability Networks.
Task and Person Specification Background The Royal Institution of Naval Architects is a world-renowned and highly respected international professional institution and learned society whose members are involved at all levels in the design, construction, maintenance and operation of all marine vessels and structures.
The role of the Developing Career Standing Committee within RINA is to support more individuals into the Naval Architecture and Maritime Engineering community, provide clear career path guidance to our members, support RINA members involved in STEM activity and support early careers professions in their career development.
Developing Careers Standing Committee Overview The working groups, and their sub-committee roles are to:
Support more individuals into the Naval Architecture and Maritime Engineering.Provide clear career path guidance to our members.Support and encourage RINA members involved in STEM activity.Secretariat Support All new Committee members will receive an induction to the committee by the Chair of the Working Group alongside the Membership Director of RINA.
Training for new committee members will be arranged by the committee Chair alongside the Membership Director.
The RINA Secretariat supports the Committee.
Time Commitment Meetings are held 10 times a year, around once a month, typically lasting 1 hour to 90 minutes.
Dates will be provided in advance.
Meetings are held online or as a hybrid (i.e.
members attending HQ combined with those joining via Teams).
Person Specification An interest in shaping RINA's strategic approach to inspiring the next generation to join the Naval Architect and Naval Maritime community.An interest in collating, sharing and promoting best practices within the Naval Architecture and Engineering sectors.Willing to meet deadlines and drive progress for members of the profession.Someone with a good network of contacts and willing to seek feedback and promote activities.Able to work collaboratively and in partnership with the RINA Executive Staff.Able to participate in Developing Careers/Subcommittee meetings and willing to make time to network on behalf of the working groups and RINA more widely at critical events and conferences.In return, the volunteer will receive the following: The opportunity to make a real difference in the development of individuals wishing to progress in their engineering career.The chance to input into the approval structures and processes of professional registration.Opportunities to input into review and consultations regarding professional registration.Excellent administrative support, as needed, from the RINA Executive Staff.The opportunity to enhance your network of contacts.Claiming CPD If you intend to use the time spent on this activity when recording your CPD, remember it must be relevant to your work or role and address a personal development need.
