About the Team

The Anaesthetic Department provides anaesthetic services in Christchurch for Te Whatu Ora Waitaha. Canterbury services a population of almost 700,000 people and is a tertiary referral centre for the South Island of New Zealand. The Paediatric Anaesthesia Team provide acute and elective anaesthesia services for neonates, infants and children and also staff the specialist Paediatric Anaesthesia on-call that provides acute services out of normal working hours.

All anaesthetists on the call roster have subspecialty experience (at least one post fellowship year of experience in a Paediatric Hospital) and form a tightly knit team to facilitate excellent paediatric anaesthesia services for our community.

The department is accredited for training by ANZCA and has a large number of trainees.

Mo te tunga | About the role

The Department of Anaesthesia based at Christchurch Hospital has a position for a Specialist Anaesthetist with an interest in Paediatrics in a full-time, permanent position.

This role includes participation in the out-of-hours on-call paediatric roster, the provision and organisation of elective and acute paediatric and neonatal anaesthesia and supervision and teaching of trainees. The role also includes a balance of elective and acute adult anaesthesia in normal working hours.

Paediatric Services are provided for neonates onwards in the areas of General Surgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, ENT, Ophthalmology and Orthopaedics. Dental, radiological and paediatric procedure sessions form part of the workload and the Department is integral in supporting the Children's oncology unit. The Canterbury DHB has two inpatient paediatric wards, a separate paediatric oncology ward, and a tertiary level neonatal unit.

Applicants for this Specialist position must have a qualification recognised for vocational registration by the Medical Council of New Zealand and must have completed at least one post-fellowship year as an anaesthetist fellow or specialist at a Paediatric Hospital.
