Sole Gardener

Details of the offer

A fantastic opportunity has become available for an experienced gardener to join an important historic garden surrounding a listed country house embedded in a conservation Estate with strong, warm family values. The estate is located in southwest Hampshire and the position is full time and permanent.

The 2-acre garden consists of a kitchen garden and greenhouse for growing vegetables and herbs for the owners' use and propagation – raised from seed and cuttings, cut flower garden, climbing roses, mixed beds and borders, lawns, and swimming pool. There is also a considerable amount of hedging and trees within the garden.

The garden is flat and has free-draining sandy acid soil. It is kept mostly organic with some use of glyphosate and pyrethrum for pathways, etc. The garden is open to the public through the NGS 2 – 3 times a year and the owners hold the occasional charity opening and events.

This is an ideal opening for a motivated Gardener wishing to make a real contribution to an established garden and shrubbery that needs further development. The successful applicant will be part of a friendly team on the estate and the gardener should have a positive attitude, work well with others as well as be self-motivated to work on their own unsupervised.

Applicants should be experienced professional gardeners with good plant knowledge and creative abilities. Experience growing fruit and vegetables as well as specialist pruning such as rose and small tree pruning is essential for the role. Spray certificates and chainsaw certificates are a requirement and training can be provided as long as there is the willingness to acquire the necessary tickets. The gardener will have a good understanding of health and safety for themselves and others and have a sensible attitude. The Estate is well equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services. The successful candidate must hold a clean full driving license.

Additional duties include contributing to the security of house and grounds, occasionally house watching, and walking the dogs when the owners are away.

A lovely 3-bedroom house within walking distance is provided with the role. Council tax is paid by the employer and water is provided by the estate. Partners and children are welcome. Pets are subject to approval.
