Mo te turanga - About the role
The role of the qualified and registered Housing Social Worker is to deliver a professional, empathetic, and effective service to people and families needing long-term sustainable accommodation and to advance the mission of The Salvation Army.
The successful candidate will practice social work frameworks, professional practice, and reporting. They should show acceptance, inclusion, and a genuine interest in people, validating their stories and aspirations. The candidate must be able to listen, relate, and affirm people in such a way that encourages them to examine their issues and create solutions that lead to sustained independence. Responsibilities include managing cases, referring clients to internal and external services in line with their goals, delivering positive outcomes, ensuring set outcomes are achieved, promptly recording client interactions and case notes, and connecting people to Salvation Army services that enhance their current circumstances.
With skills, planning, and purposeful action, the candidate will support people to find a home and neighborhood in which they can build their future. This is an exciting opportunity to join a hard-working team committed to supporting whanau and to work with a long-standing social service provider partnering with the community to tackle homelessness.
Minimum Requirements:
Proven relevant Social Work experience of at least 2 years
Holds a recognised Social Work Degree Qualification or equivalent
Fully registered with the Social Work Registration Board
Clean full driver's license
Legally entitled to work in New Zealand
Strong relationship building skills
Previous or current experience in transitional housing is advantageous
Ability to understand and relate to people from diverse backgrounds experiencing hardship, trauma, and/or mental unwellness
Role modelling commitment to engage and journey with people, providing support for personal responsibility and motivation to achieve their goals
Maintains a high level of professional practice recognizing the dignity and individuality of clients
Computer literate including Teams, Outlook, and Office 365
Able to relate to people with sensitivity, care, and patience
Highly developed written and oral communication skills
A strong understanding of, and a heart for, social justice issues
Ability to work to targets and deadlines
Ability to work proactively, problem-solve, and meet multiple demands
Strong cultural competency, with the ability to work from a bicultural perspective

The starting salary for this role is likely to fall between $68k and $102k. This role is covered by the pay equity agreement, and the final remuneration will depend on the years of experience of the preferred candidate.
