The position entails managing the processing of goods and having a keen eye for curating these goods at a fast pace. You will have numerous interactions every day with our many varied donors and shoppers as well as our volunteer workforce.If you are an energetic people person with excellent communication skills, marketing mojo, management and retail experience and have an understanding of the second-hand sector, then apply today.Responsible to: Retail Development ManagerOperationally responsible for: Assistant Shop Manager / Shop Supervisors / VolunteersPurpose of the position:To lead, manage and be responsible for the overall shop performance: achieve turnover and surplus objectives, manage team of shop staff and volunteers, manage stock.Functional relationships:Retail Development ManagerCoordinator of VolunteersChief Executive OfficerOCH StaffMembers of PublicSpecific areas of responsibility:Key Result Areas:To generate income that will contribute to the running costs of the Otago Community Hospice allowing the service to be provided free of charge to the patients and families in our care.To ensure the Shop's surplus is in line with or in excess of budget.To promote awareness of Hospice care in the community and foster good public relations.To have a highly functioning team of staff and volunteers.Supervise the sorting and pricing items for sale; delegate and train others as required.Ensure that donated goods are clean, well presented and priced accordingly to maximise their potential return.Change stock as necessary to maintain customer interest.Keep stock at manageable levels; discard at Shop Manager's discretion.Use social media to promote the Shop's activities and generate interest and customer interaction; delegate as required.Arrange that the Shop is opened on time and locked securely at close of business.Organise supplies for Shop personnel e.g. toilet paper, towels, tea and coffee, stationary.Arrange collection of donated goods where delivery is not possible.Administration:Bank the daily takings, balance the tills and complete the reconciliations. Ensure checks are completed daily to minimize or eliminate till variances.Be responsible for petty cash system – ensure petty cash reconciliations are fully completed with detail and receipts provided.Ensure the Shop's roster is maintained and distributed to volunteers, working a minimum of 1 month ahead, including holiday cover.Sign off leave applications for direct reports. Ensure time sheets are completed on time.Work with the Coordinator of Volunteers.Foster a positive Shop team, provide training and support, in liaison with the Coordinator of Volunteers and Retail Development Manager, for volunteers and staff.Ensure Coordinator of Volunteers is advised when volunteers resign.Ensure all new Staff and volunteers are properly inducted, and aware of Hospice policies and procedures, including Health & Safety, personal purchases and cash donation policies.Maintaining Compliance:Be responsible for compliance with Hospice Health & Safety policies within the Shop.Be familiar with, monitor and report any new hazards relating to Hospice facilities, services and resources within the Shop.Maintain an active role in the Hospice quality improvement programme.Maintain safe organised and neat work areas.Understand and comply with all relevant Hospice policies and procedures.Communication and Supervision:Attend Hospice education sessions as applicable to position.Attend Hospice staff meetings as required.Maintain own professional development relevant to the position.Other Duties:Additional duties within the scope of the role may need to be undertaken from time to time.Experience:Knowledge and skills:Sound knowledge of second-hand goods sectorEffective manager of Staff and volunteersDemonstrate effective problem solving, decision making, time management and delegation skillsExhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)Attributes:Able to work autonomously as well as within a teamSelf-motivated, innovative and empathicAble to seek knowledge and skills as requiredHave ability to cope with stress, conflicting demands and a heavy and at times physically demanding workloadKnow self and own limitations and when to seek supportMaintain professional relationship and rapport with Staff and volunteers
